Bandel Bezzerides

d. May 7, 2019

Dr. Bandel Bezzerides was born in Stockton, CA on June the 30th, 1940 and passed away on Tuesday, May 7, 2019.

He attended the University of California at Berkeley as an undergraduate for physics and was awarded the prestigious University Medal in 1961, which is bestowed upon the top graduating senior. That same year, at age 21, he was named one of Time Magazine’s “Best and Brightest”.

He received his Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in theoretical physics in 1967. After a brief postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford, he completed his postdoctoral work at Lawrence Livermore Labs and went on to assume a staff position at the National Aeronautics and Oceanographic Administration in Boulder, CO.

He moved to Los Alamos in 1974 where he was recruited as a staff scientist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory; he remained there until his retirement. His work focused on the plasma instabilities during inertial confinement laser fusion and advanced the field with fundamental discoveries.

He was preceded in death by his parents Agapios and Marianthe and his sisters Margaret and Elizabeth. He is survived by his wife of 50 years Elizabeth, three children, Annamarie (Garrett Michael), university fundraising leader, of Carlsbad, CA; Vassilios (Ann), pediatric cardiologist, of Boston, MA; and, Marianthe, film composer, of Long Beach, CA; and five grandchildren: Marina, Iliana, Nicholas, Peter, and Elias.

The family would like to acknowledge Sarah at High Desert Hospice and Dr. Rosemary and Danielle DeCosta of Enchanted Living New Mexico in Albuquerque for their care of Dr. Bezzerides.

His children most credit him with instilling in them an appreciation for the academe and for never taking a shortcut. He always encouraged them to strive for excellence in their career pursuits and passions. May his memory be eternal.
