Rose Martinez

d. July 25, 2020

Rose Martinez, 73, a resident of Ensenada, New Mexico passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side on Saturday, July 25, 2020. Rose was born in Cebolla, New Mexico on December 6, 1946 to Rosa and Alfonso “Choncho” Martinez.  She was the middle of five children.  Rose graduated from Tierra Amarilla High School and then went on to Highlands University where she graduated with her B.A. in education and later obtained her master’s degree from the University of New Mexico.

Rose married Robert A. Martinez on July 13, 1968 and together they had three daughters, Rebecca “Becky,” Rachel, and Ramona “Mona.” Throughout her life, Rose was a devoted catholic and a dedicated educator. Rose instilled the value of education within her community, her students, and her family.  Rose began her teaching career in the early 1970’s at the Albuquerque Public Schools before she moved to the Chama Valley School District where she continued her teaching career at Escalante High School as the business education teacher, and finally retired in 1998. She was known as  “Miss Rose” to her many students. For a period of time, Rose also taught college classes at Northern New Mexico College.

Not only was Rose dedicated to education, she was committed to her community as a community leader and organizer.  She proudly served on the Chama Valley School Board and on the La Clinica del Pueblo Board of Directors.  Throughout her life Rose volunteered for her church, the San Jose Catholic Parish.  Rose’s faith played a vital role in her life.  Following her retirement as a teacher, Rose continued her career in public service where she was employed with Rio Arriba County as the Human Resource Manager.  She then took on the role of managing the Chama Valley Chamber of Commerce where she truly enjoyed meeting new people from all over the country.  Rose was a proud and loyal Democrat.  Throughout her life she was engaged in the Democratic Party in various capacities, whether it was volunteering, organizing, or as a candidate.

Rose clearly played many roles throughout her life.  However, the most special role to Rose was that of “Nana” to her beloved grandchildren, Roman, Rayann, and Garrett. Miss Rose will always be remembered for her beautiful smile, her words of advice, and words of encouragement.

Rose was preceded in death by her father, Alfonso (Choncho) Martinez, her mother, Rosa Martinez, her brother Al Martinez, her sister Barbara (Vita) Messer, and her niece and goddaughter, Angela Ulibarri. She is survived by her husband, Robert A. Martinez, her children: Becky Martinez and husband Luis Martinez, Rachel Mora and husband Gary Mora, Ramona Martinez-Salopek and husband Anton Salopek, her grandchildren: Roman Martinez, Rayann Mora, and Garrett Martinez, her siblings: Roy Martinez and Betty Ulibarri, many nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 8, 2020 at the San Jose Parish Church in Los Ojos with the rosary beginning at 10:00 a.m. and mass at 11:00 a.m.  Rose will be buried in her beloved Cebolla following the services.  The family of Rose Martinez has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Espanola Valley. 505-747-7477-www.devargasfuneral.com
