(MARIA MERCEDES ELENA SUAZO), MERCY MARTINEZ, 81, a resident of Rio Chama, went to be with our lord and savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, February 4, 2020, after battling a lengthy illness. She was born on January 12, 1939 to Valentin and Elena Suazo in Barranco,NM. She was the youngest of 7 siblings. Mercy was preceded in death by her parents, Valentin and Elena Suazo and husband Nelson Martinez; son, Nelson Martinez Jr. and her daughter Mary-Ninfa Lovato, mother-in-law, Eusevia Maria Martinez, father-in-law, Jose Acasio Martinez and brother in law, Jerome Martinez, sisters, Dora Suazo, Cordie Atencio, Bennie Ferran, Mary Martinez and brother Ramon Suazo. She is survived by her twin daughters, Marilyn Martinez-Ortiz (Jerry), Carolyn Guillen and son, Marvin R. Martinez (Edwina) of Rio Chama, NM. Her eldest brother Valentin B. Suazo Jr., (Annemarie) of Silver Spring, Maryland, brother-in-law, Joe Martinez (Florence) and numerous relatives and friends. Mercy had nine grandchildren, Monica Lovato, John Guillen, Jeremy Martinez, Stephanie, Corona-Martinez, Megan Martinez, Javier Diaz, Billie Jo Martinez, Kristen Ellena Martinez, eight great-grandchildren, Jestiny, Devin and Lucas Martinez, Elikai Corona Martinez, Mikiaela Guillen, Isaiah and Ava Diaz and baby Maddison Lynn Martinez. Our dearest mother, grandmother will forever be in our hearts. Mercy was an active member of the San Jose Society of Barranco in Abiquiu and actively involved with her church. She attended adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with her daughter Carolyn Guillen on a weekly basis for the last four years. Mercy served as a Eucharist minister for 15 years. She traveled to Venezuela, Italy, France and Mexico with her family. Mercy also enjoyed gardening and canning of fruits and vegetables. She enjoyed attending concerts of many New Mexico artists at various venues. Mercy’s family and especially her great grandchildren were her pride and joy. She was employed at LANL with the Zia Company for many years. A wake service will be held on Sunday, February 9, 2020 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory, with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, February 10, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at  St. Thomas Catholic Church in Abiquiu, with a burial to follow at El Campo Santo de Los Angelas Cemetery. Serving the Family as pallbearers are Armando Atencio and Manuel Martinez and all her Grandchildren, honorary pallbearers named are her great-grandchildren and Rudy Atencio.
