Mary Martinez

Mary A. Martinez, age 76, a resident of Chimayo passed away peacefully Monday, September 23, 2019 at her home due to a lengthy illness. She was born August 23, 1943 to Arturo and Lupita Herrera in Espanola.  She was marriedon October 13, 1962 to her life long friend and love, Jose C. Martinez. She dedicated her life and was baptized to Jehovah in 1960 as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses,   She remained faithful and was a dedicated servant of Jehovah until her death.

Mary loved her family and was a devoted mother and wife.  She treasured her children and grandchildren and embraced every moment with them.  She especially loved her role as a grandmother.  She was generous and had a kind personality that made the people around her laugh.  This suited her well for the life she chose in serving Jehovah while she engaged in the field ministry during her lifetime.  During that time, she was able to help many people learn about the truths in the Bible and the hope for mankind that it holds out.

She made an impact on the lives of both her family and her spiritual family.  Her son Joseph remembers that she sewed him a green suit when he graduated from kindergarten and the feeling of love that she had made it just for him. “She did everything for me.  She taught me how to remember Bible scriptures and the first one she taught me was Psalms 83:18.  She taught me what it meant and the importance of using God’s name.  I will forever be grateful that I had such a loving mother and father who taught me the truth about God.”

Mary loved to sew and she enjoyed her time crafting, baking, canning and keeping an immaculate house.  She was hospitable with everyone she met.  She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Mary was preceded in death in 2016 by her son Timothy J. Martinez.  She is survived by her husband of 58 years, JoseMartinez of Chimayo, her sons, James Martinez and wife Cindy of Chimayo and Joseph Martinez and wife Jennifer of Santa Fe, daughter-in-law Kathy Martinez of Chimayo, her grandsons, Kenny and Micah Martinez of Santa Fe, her sisters, Margaret Herrera of Espanola, Beatrice Herrera of Albuquerque and Lillian Medina of Albuquerque and many other relatives and friends.  Special thanks to Ambercare staff, especially Claudette and Ashley for all their help and support.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at 2:00 pm at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses located at 18625 US Hwy 84/285, Española, NM 87532. The family of Mary Martinez have entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley. 505-747-7477
