Martha Maestas

Martha Julia Maestas, 82, a resident of La Puebla, passed away peacefully in her sleep on August 1st, 2020. She was preceded in death by her parents, Gustavo and Marina Romero, mother-in-law Sinforosa Maestas, husband Joe T. Maestas, Sisters Mela Gorman and Pita Nabholz, brothers Willie Romero, Eufemio Romero and Gustavo Romero.

Martha is survived by her children Anthony (Susan) Maestas, Roseanne (Phillip) Roybal, David Maestas, Diana (Clif) Mathews and Andrea (David) Martinez; Sisters Angie (Leroy) Ortiz and Virginia Montoya and Brother Julian (Frances) Romero; Grandchildren Diego, Katrina, Felicia, Camille, Scott, Mariah, Deanna, Marina, Makena, Jake and Luke; great grandchildren Mason, Aubree, Hayden, Liam, Lucas and Celestina.

Martha was a school bus driver for the Espanola Public School District for over 20 years. She was known by many as a very caring and “strict” bus driver, but was often adored by her student riders. Martha was a devout Catholic and belonged to the Holy Cross Carmelitas, Catholic Daughters, and Sociedad Nuestro Senora del Carmen. Martha loved all her family, but had a special place in her heart for her children, grandchildren, nieces & nephews. She was warmhearted, humorous, and loved to dance.

Public visitation will begin Sunday August 9, 2020 from 6:00 - 7:00 pm in the Sangre de Cristo chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home; the rosary will begin at 7:00 pm. The Funeral mass will be held on Monday, August 10, 2020 at the Holy Cross Church at 11:00 am with burial ceremony following at the Holy Cross Cemetery. The pallbearers are Ronald Montoya, Roy Maestas, Robert Lucero Jr., Javier Romero, Mario Ortiz and Andy Romero.

Special thanks to all the family, friends, and caregivers who prayed for Martha’s health and helped her for the past 10 years. Thank you for ensuring she was well taken care of and loved.
