Marilyn LaForge (Dunlop)

d. August 31, 2020

It is with great sadness that the family of longtime Los Alamos area resident Marilyn LaForge (Dunlop) announces her passing on August 31, 2020 at the age of 92.

The eldest of three children, she was born to Kenneth and Thelma (Dickens) LaForge in Vassar, Michigan in 1928. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Gerry and Don. Sadly, brother Don passed away just days earlier on August 26th.

Until health conditions made it impossible, Marilyn relished being in the great outdoors among the pines. She loved the Jemez mountains, spending many happy years living there and enjoying daily hikes with her dogs.

Marilyn was a gifted musician, playing both piano and violin. She played in several symphonic orchestras in her lifetime, including the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and orchestras in Los Alamos, Taos, and Roswell. She was a beloved, passionate, piano and violin teacher to many young people in Los Alamos, including her Los Alamos grandchildren. Her kindness and love of music had a lasting impact on her students, many of whom kept in touch with her through the years.

An authority on natural foods, nutrition, and natural healing, Marilyn worked at local health food stores for many years. Customers appreciated her knowledge and sought her out for advice.

Marilyn is survived by loving family, sons David Dunlop of Florida, Paul (Kate) Dunlop of Michigan, Jerry (Wanda) Dunlop of Elephant Butte, and daughter Jane (Rick) Hemphill of Los Alamos.  Grandchildren Erin Hemphill, Matthew Hemphill, Melissa Schumacher, Ryan Hemphill, Katie Hemphill, Megan Hemphill, of Los Alamos, and Jeremy, Joel, Robbie, and Derek Dunlop of Michigan. Great grandchildren Charlotte, Kellan, Ellie, Luke, Logan, and Ian. Niece Martina Lara, who held a special place in Marilyn’s heart, also survives.

Cremation has taken place and a family celebration of her life will be held at a later date. The Family of Marilyn LaForge (Dunlop) has entrusted the care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home of the Espanola Valley 505-747-7477www.devargasfuneral.com
