Lugarda Montoya

d. October 14, 2021

Lugarda Montoya of Chimayo, NM passed away peacefully at home on October 14, 2021. She is preceded in death by her husband of 46 years Orlando Montoya, her parents, Mauricio and Andrellita Martinez, sisters Marianita Jaramillo (Floyd) and Ninfa Martinez, brothers, Pula Martinez (Ruby), Mauricio Martinez, Ernesto Martinez, and Brother-in-law Rudy Martinez.

Lugarda along with her 5 brothers and 3 sisters were raised in the Catholic faith. Faith and prayer were the lifeline of her entire life. Before the age of 10, Lugarda followed the family tradition of consecrating her life to Our Lady of Mount Carmel and became a Carmelita. Lugarda was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother and friend to many. In 1957, she married Orlando Montoya and they raised 5 children, 1 girl and 4 boys. Lugarda had a unique and loving relationship with each one of her children and supported all of her family members with her strong words of wisdom and encouragement. Her priority in life was that of her family whether it was at work or at play. She instilled the importance of faith in God, love of family and the importance of education. Lugarda’s children describe their mother as a very loving, kind, charismatic and caring person with a generous heart who was always thinking of the welfare of others as well as being independent, strong willed and optimistic. She was also a prayer warrior and had a deep love for God and our Blessed Mother. In short, she was “a ball of fire” all rolled into this beautiful woman of God. Everywhere she went, Lugarda was able to touch the hearts of many and it was common for others to see her as a friend or view her as part of their family.

Lugarda is survived by her daughter Geraldine Lujan (Ronald), and her sons Andy Montoya, Morris Montoya (Cheryl), Kelly Montoya (Joann), and Michael Montoya. Becoming a grandmother was a role that she welcomed and so many of her grandchildren, nieces, and nephews viewed her as their second mom. Lugarda had 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She is also survived by a close nephew, Ralph Martinez, her sister Catalina Martinez, her brother Nestor (Delia), Richard Martinez (Lillian), sister in laws Eliza Martinez, Genoveva Archuleta, Carolina and Marie Montoya and numerous nieces and nephews. Lugarda loved people and she had a way of making others feel special and everyone including her in-laws, neighbors and friends brought so much joy to her life.

Lugarda was a very prayerful woman who always smiled and said thank you. She believed in her eternal home. Her love of the rosary, the church, and our Blessed Mother Mary will always be part of the memories that we will share in our family. We know and believe that we will see our mother again in our eternal home. In John 14:3, God’s Word states, “I have gone to prepare a special place for you so that where I am you may also be.” The family of Lugarda Montoya stands firm on this promise and we are comforted that we will see her again! Lugarda will be greatly missed by her family but we trust that she is now free and able to see, dance and sing in the presence of Our Savior and King Jesus Christ. “Until we see you again, Mom, Vaya con Dios.”

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has reached out with acts of love, friendship, food and fellowship during this challenging time. May God bless you! We also want to thank the following: Kayla and Orlando Montoya, who stepped in to love and care for her grandmother during the final months of her precious life. Darlene Archuleta, who cared for our mother and became an integral part of our family during the time our mother needed help the most. Reese Nez who helped care for our mom during her visits sharing love, kindness and generosity. Maida and Carolina Montoya, for visiting and spoiling our mom during her illness; Ambercare Options, Trisha, Mary Helen, Gracie, Janice and all who had a hand in caring for our mother.

A rosary will take place at 5:30 pm on Thursday, October 21, 2021 at  DeVargas Funeral Home. Mass will be held on Friday, October 22, 2021 at 10:00 am at the Holy Family Parish in Chimayo with burial to follow at the Nuestra Senora de Carmen Cemetery.
