Joseph Gene Lopez, 82, a resident of Lyden, New Mexico, passed away on Saturday, November 28, 2020 after a courageous battle with brain cancer. He was born to Ercilia and Amador Lopez on August 30, 1938. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, beloved daughter Theresa Anne Lopez, beloved son-in-law Eddie Gallegos, brothers George Lopez, Chuck Mollohan, nephew Georgie Lopez, and in-laws Benito and Tita Espinoza.

Mr. Lopez has survived and lived a beautiful life with his One and Only, Rosina Lopez. They were married for 60 years and had two beautiful daughters, Theresa and Betty (Robert). Gene and Rosina shared 2 grandchildren Theresa Perraglio (Dalas) and Edward Gallegos, and loved spending time their two great-grandchildren, Josiah and Armani. Gene had great relationships with all his siblings, no matter how far or near they were. He enjoyed spending time with his brothers Leroy Lopez and Andy Lopez (Kathy), sisters Charlotte Sanchez, Christina Melendez and Lisa Boone (David). He also shared a special relationship with his in-laws Shaya Lopez, Joe A. Espinoza, and Robert Espinoza (Betty). He had many God-children, nephews, nieces and longtime friends, Walt Lea, Julio Garcia, Ralph Vijil, and many relatives and friends.

Mr. Lopez was a 1958 graduate of Santa Cruz High School. He served his county in the United States Air Force and continued to do so a machinist and welder for Los Alamos Nation Lab. He owned and operated a successful welding shop, radiator shop and a small convenience store in Santa Cruz.

Mr. Lopez was the President of the Espanola Farmers Market, where he met lots of amazing people and new friends from our community. He loved working on his apple orchard, planting roses for his wife, and growing chili. Mr. Lopez also served on advisory boards of the NMSU Alcalde Science Center, the Rio Arriba CS and a member of the NM Apple Council. Mr. Lopez was a Pelegrino which he would dedicate time to walk and pray on a 100 mile pilgrimage for 22 years. He met lifelong friends whom he called brothers during that spiritual journey.

Mr. Lopez accomplished many things and held many titles in his life. His passing will not only effect his mourning family but his community.

Mr. Lopez loved all his friends and family. He had a special bond with his son-in-law Robert, who he called his number One. They shared many great memories together.

Our family would like to send a special thank you to Veronica Martinez, RN, Amanda Lumsden, RN, and David Paul, RN, for your kindness and quality care. We are so grateful that we had such a supportive medical team on our side during this difficult time.
