Jose Ramon Martinez: 2/22/35 - 08/30/19

Jose Ramon Martinez (aka “The Legend”) of Chamita NM, raised in San Juan Pueblo, went to be with the Lord on Friday August 30th, 2019 surrounded by his family.  He was 84 years old. He was preceded in death by his parents Antonio and Manuelita Martinez, Wife Frances Martinez, Sisters Sophia Martinez (Max), Isabelle Guillen (Vicente), Maria Maes (Manuel), Odila Montoya (Benny), Teresita Salazar (Ruben), Brothers Elisaido Martinez (Ramona), Juan Esteban Martinez (Estella) sister-in-law Fortunata Martinez, and various nephews and nieces. He is survived by his sister Mercedes Martinez of Chamita, brother, Antonio Martinez Jr. of Los Luceros, Step-daughter Thurza Torrez; granddaughter, Kamella Bird-Romero; great-grandchildren, Gia and Garrett Abeyta and his many beloved nephews and nieces.  He was employed by Los Alamos National Laboratory for 22 years. Raymond was a well-known musician/guitar and played with several bands in the valley for over 45 years.  Public visitation will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, September 9, 2019 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Ohkay Owingeh with a rosary to follow at 6:30 p.m. A memorial mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 10, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. also at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Ohkay Owingeh with a burial to follow at the Alcalde Cemetery. Attending as pallbearer is Jose Garcia. Honorary pallbearers are his friends Dellio Villareal, Jake “Chico Rey” Segovia, James Walter Dupree, Morrison Bird-Romero, Goddaughter Pammie Martinez, and special friend Juanita “Bambi” Chavez.  Special thanks to our Salazar cousins from Chamita for their loving care of Uncle Raymond in his Golden years. Thanks to our cousin, Father Clarence Maes and Father Scott for anointing our Tio in the hospital.  Also, thanks to Presbyterian Hospital “Rust Center” in Albuquerque and the Espanola facility for their kind care of our Tio and brother.  Raymond has been entrusted to DeVargas Funeral Home.  The family of Jose Ramon Martinez has entrusted the care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Espanola Valley. 505-747-7477
