JOSE MELICENDRO NARANJO , 92, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, November 14, 2019. He was born on September 14, 1927 to the late Estanislao and Octaviana Naranjo. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernie; infant son, Daniel; grandson, Robert; sisters, Ramoncita, Emeteria, Rumalda and Minnie. He graduated from Santa Cruz High School and after graduation he joined the United States Navy. As a World War II Veteran, he served on the U.S.S. Bushnell as a Seaman Second Class Torpedo Specialist. He was stationed at Submarine Bases in Subic Bay, Philippines, Guam, China, Pearl Harbor and Mare Island, California. He was Honorably Discharged in 1947 and received the Victory Medal World War II. Upon returning home he became a journeyman Carpenter and learned his craft expertly. He was a member of the Carpenter Union Post 1505 for seventy years, worked for Zia Company and retired from Johnson Control in Los Alamos. After retirement, he enjoyed working in his small farm. He loved to garden and work on his beautiful orchard, sharing his bountiful crops with family, friends and neighbors. He cared and unconditionally loved his family dearly and will be greatly missed. He was a lifelong parishioner of Santa Cruz de la Cañada Catholic Church and a member of the Coro Santa Teresita. Mr. Naranjo is survived by his daughters, Rosemarie Lujan, and Barbara Ricci and husband John; sons, Benje Naranjo and Donald Naranjo and wife Kathy; grandchildren, Jennifer, Kenneth, Jeffrey, Jeremy, Brandon and many other sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Santa Cruz. Burial to follow on Thursday, November 21, 2019 at 11:15 a.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Santa Cruz. The family of Jose Melicendro Naranjo has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
