Jose Montoya

Jose Manuel Montoya JR.  Age 36 from Hernandez, NM. Passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on January 20, 2022. He was preceded in death by his grandparents George and Olivia Martinez of Velarde, Manuel and Mary Montoya of Ohkay Owingeh, and Antonio and Epimenia Martinez of Ranchitos.  Nephew, Joey Mondragon, Niece, Ava Gonzales, Stepfather , Joe Howard Martinez, Stepbrother, Joe Martinez, Cousin, Kathleen Roybal, and Partner/Mother of his children, Amanda Atencio.

Jose enlisted in the US Army Reserves at age 17. He graduated from Basic Training in Fort Knox, Kentucky on September 3, 2003. He then went to Baltimore, Maryland and completed AIT and graduated in Welding. Jose returned to New Mexico and began a career in Construction. He eventually became a Certified Nursing Assistant taking care of the elderly in our community. He continued to do both professions until his sickness. Jose loved the outdoors, fishing, camping and Cooking. He had a personality that attracted everyone and was always the center of attention.

Jose is survived by his Stepdaughter, La'Shae Atencio, Daughters, Leah and Arey Montoya, Son, Iryen Montoya of Ohkay Owingeh. Mother, Diana Martinez of Velarde. Father, Jose Montoya SR. of El Duende. Stepmother, Edna Montoya of El Duende. Sisters, Georgette Montoya (Herman Mondragon) El Duende, Maria Montoya (Fred Baca) Hernandez, Angel Montoya (William) El Duende, Stepsister, Amanda Griego (Jose) Chimayo. Brother, Rafael Maldonado (Jessica Montoya) Espanola.  Nieces and nephews: Ashley Mondragon (Ben), Fred Baca Jr. DeeAnna Baca (Jullian), Jovan Baca (Karina), Amorina and Athena Montoya, Jordan Lopez, Gabriel, Destiny, Jesse, Faith Maldonado, Joseph Martinez (Denise), Stephanie and Christina Aguino, Jose Griego Jr. (Gina), Luis and Giovanna Griego. Great nieces and nephews: Tristen, Joey, Aubry, and Leandra Serna, Jullian Fernandez, Marisol and Jovan Daniel Baca. Mateo Griego.

A Devotional Service will be held on January 31, 2022 at 6:30 pm at Devargas Funeral Home and Crematory. Private burial will be held at a later date.
