Frutoso Chavez

d. August 30, 2021

Frutoso N. Chavez, age 85, resident of Albuquerque, passed away Monday, August 30, 2021. He is survived by his loving wife, Grace Chavez; son, Chester Chavez; daughters, Cheryl Chavez, Carla Acosta (Anthony), and Cindy Carrillo (Mark); grandchildren, Jasmine Aragon (Joseph), Julie Ortiz (Gabe), Demetrius Carrillo, Carlos Acosta, and Stephanie Chavez; great-grandchildren, Alicia, Andres, Lyla, and Sophia Aragon, and his sister, Helen Barela. He was preceded in death by his son, Calvin Chavez; his grandson, Andre Carrillo; his parents, George and Frances Chavez; and his brothers, Bennie, Levi and Raymond Chavez.

Frutoso was born in Chimayo, NM, graduated from Santa Cruz High School, and attended Highlands University.
He was drafted by the U.S. Army and stationed in Germany during the Korean War. After serving his tour of duty for the U.S. Army, he returned to his beloved Chimayo. Thereafter he moved to California to work at an aircraft company, while at the same time attending night school, to pursue his license as a Barber and met the love of his life, Grace.

After the birth of his first child, he moved back to his beloved Chimayo and built a home and worked with the Zia company in Los Alamos during the day and as a Barber in the evenings and weekends. He was encouraged to become a Business Agent for the Laborers Union Local #16. He ran for Secretary Treasurer and later ran for the position of Business Manager, which relocated his family from Chimayo to Albuquerque. He served in these positions for the Laborers Union for over 25 years, when he subsequently retired. After retirement, he enjoyed going to the Casino, watching football (secretly a Cowboy fan, but said he was a Bronco fan), cheering for the UNM Lobos, (even though all his kids went to NMSU and were Aggies). He liked keeping in touch with family and friends. He would light up with excitement when his grandchildren and great-grandchildren would visit and tell them stories about his life.

A Rosary will be recited on Friday, September 10, 2021, 9:30 a.m. followed by Mass of Christian Burial at St. Jude Thaddeus Church, 5712 Paradise Blvd. NE in Albuquerque.

Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 7999 Wyoming Blvd. in Albuquerque.
