EUGENIA “GINA” DURAN, 91, peacefully went to be with our Lord on Friday, February 19, 2021 following a lengthy battle with renal failure. She was born on October 2, 1929 and was a resident of Chamita. She was preceded in death by her parents, Pedro and Maria Fruitosa Sanchez; husband, Melisendro H. Duran; father and mother-in-law, Jose Todocio and Lucia Duran; sons, Melisendro Duran, Jr., Gene Duran, Pablo Duran and Joseph F. Trujillo; sons-in-law, JD Mascareñas, Sr. and Milton M. Maestas; grandchildren, JD Mascareñas, Jr. and Vanessa Perea; siblings, Viola McTeigue, LouAnn Sanchez, Jose Dennis Sanchez, Willie Sanchez, Richard Sanchez, Jimmy McTeigue, Augustine Ulibarri and Lydia Sanchez; brothers and sisters-in-law, Andronico and Sergio Duran, Maria Inez, Gregorita Rael and Valentine Sandoval. Eugenia “Gina” was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. In her early years she helped in the upbringing of her siblings and helped with the family farm in Ojo Sarco. She worked for the Atomic Energy Commission (LANL) during the forties until she met the love of her life in 1940 and were married on August 10, 1950. After the raising of her children and grandchildren she worked various jobs as a waitress at Casa Nova, ran her own food truck (Gina’s Place) and security officer until her illness took over her life. Mrs. Duran is survived by her children, Betty Espinoza (Manuel), Abel Duran, Connie Montoya (Michael), Louanna Maestas, Joe Duran (Robin), Rosie Mascareñas, Patricio Duran (Mari), Pauline Rael (Rubel), Brenda Marquez (Rogelio) and a granddaughter raised as a daughter, Goldyne Duran; daughter-in-law, Mary Lou Duran; sister, Anita Ulibarri; sisters-in-law, Caroline Sanchez and Aselia Sandoval; grandchildren, Brian, Conrad, Diego, Everett, Angela, JV, Jolyn, Alejandra, Christy, Adrian, Michele, Carlos, Jose, Antonio, Miguel, Gabriel, Melissa, Diondra, Aracely and Emerald; 40 great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends. A service will be held on Tuesday, March 2, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Peace of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, only 5 people will be allowed in the building at one time. Social distancing and masks will be required. Burial to follow at 12:45 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers, Conrad Espinoza, JV Trujillo, Eric Carmona, Joshua Trujillo, Louanna Maestas, Antonio Duran, Damian Mascareñas, Angel Cordova, and Aracely Marquez. Honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her family at the Española Dialysis Center. The family of Eugenia “Gina” Duran has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
