Edalia Flora Herrera, 89, a resident of La Villita and formerly of Chamita, went to be with our Lord on July 28, 2020. Flora was preceded in death by her parents Benjamin and Anita Herrera, lifelong companion Joe Gallegos, a nephew whom she raised as a son, Gilbert B. Herrera, and sisters-in-law Ida and Lorraine Herrera.
Flora is survived by her son David Herrera, daughter and caregiver Sylvia Herrera (Marty), and Marcella Herrera; Brothers: Robert and Ben Herrera; Grandchildren: Craig Herrera, Tommy Cardosa, Allen Herrera (Bernadette) and Judy Garcia; Step-granddaughter: Genette Herrera-Salazar; Great-grandchildren: Allen Herrera Jr. (Heather), Jay Carley, Jordan Garcia; Step-grandchildren: Justice Salazar and Zuriel Salazar; and her adorable great-great-granddaughter, Aly Herrera. Nieces and nephews: Jimmy Herrera (Kimberly), Esther (Mark) Trujillo, Robert Herrera, Gilbert Archuleta, Dwight Herrera, Denise (Mike) Benavidez, Dwayne Herrera, LaVerne (Jeff) Hay; Great nieces and nephews: Crystal (Michael) Sanchez, Gabe Trujillo (Sasha) and Elliana Hay.
Flora loved the outdoors. One of her favorite spots was Heron Lake where she and Joe would set up camp and go fishing on their boat. In the fall you would find Flora in the mountains picking pinon. Flora also loved her dabbers and playing bingo. The fresh smell of posole filled her kitchen as she loved to cook. Flora loved to bake and was known for her awesome rum cake. Flora loved getting her hair and nails done weekly with her daughter, Sylvia.
Serving as Pallbearers will be Craig, Jimmy, Allen Jr., Dwight, and Dwayne Herrera and Tommy Cardosa Honorary Pallbearers include Rose Mascarenas, Carmen Martinez, Ruth Lucero, Eppie and Suzie Salazar, Patricia Lewis, Louise and Tony Vigil, Paula Duran, Martin Herrera, Rose Sinola, Loretta Salazar, and all of Flora’s special cousins living in Albuquerque.
The family would like to thank Jimmy and Kim Herrera, Allen Herrera Jr. and Heather, Paula Duran, and Martin Herrera for their love, care, and support. We would also like to thank the nurses who gave Flora excellent care including Erica Carballo, Corine Flores, and all the staff from Giving Home Health Care. A special thank you to Father Nathan Lopez and Deacon John Bird for the beautiful mass, and David Salazar for bringing Flora her weekly communion. We are also very grateful for Esther, Mark, Bobby and Gilbert leading a beautiful rosary, Antoinette Garcia and Juanita Bird for years of friendship and for making Flora always feel beautiful, Peter Mascarenas for helping lay our beloved Flora to eternal rest, and for the helpful staff at the DeVargas Funeral Home. Public visitation will begin on Monday, August 3, 2020 at 5:30 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory, with a rosary to follow at 6:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 4, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Ohkay Owingeh, with a burial to follow at the Chamita San Pedro Cemetery.
