Cornelio Herrera, Jr., 77, was born on July 28, 1942 in Nambe, NM. After a lengthy illness, he passed away on March 3, 2020. He is preceded in death by his son James “Arnie” Herrera, his mother Antonia Herrera, his father Cornelio Sr. and his brother Lazaro Herrera.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marie, his daughter, Sandra. His grandchildren Marcus (Wife Aileen), Matthew and Tiffany Lopez. His one and only great granddaughter Kailee Lopez. Brothers Manuel (Wife Viola), George (Wife Laura), Jake Herrera. Sisters Alice Garcia, Rosemary Martinez (Husband Joe), Corrine Flores, Edalia Crespin, Marilyn Britton. Numerous nieces and nephews.
Junior, or “Uncle Corn” as he was known by many, served in Korea during the Vietnam War. He retired from the State of New Mexico Surplus Property where he worked for 26 years. After retirement, Junior worked as a park ranger at Nambe Falls for 17 seasons, a job he looked forward to working every season. He was an avid sports fan, and his favorite teams were the Dallas Cowboys, the New York Yankees, and the Los Angeles Lakers. Family meant more to him than anything, and he always enjoyed spending time with them. His pride and joy were his grandchildren, and his eyes would always light up, especially when he saw his Kailee.
Serving as pallbearers will be Marcus and Matthew Lopez, Macario Gutierrez, Matthew Garcia, Manuel Herrera, Jr. and Wilfred Fresquez. A Rosary will be recited on Thursday March 12, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. with mass of Christian burial to be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. at the sacred heart of Jesus catholic church in Nambe with a burial to follow at 12:45 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. A Meal will be served at the Nambe Pueblo Senior Center in Nambe Pueblo, NM following burial.
