Baudino (Buddy) Montoya

d. October 2, 2020

The Lord took Baudiño (Buddy) J. Montoya into his heavenly home on October 2, 2020, after 89 productive years on this earth. He is now in his other house. A resident of Cuyamungue, he passed away peacefully at home after a lengthy illness. We honor those gone before him; beloved son, Daniel Montoya; his parents, Ramon Montoya and Catalina Montoya; his brothers, Esquipula, Henry, Joe; sister Veva; in-laws, Gavino and Eliza Rivera, Laura Montoya, and Angela Lopez.

Buddy was born in Cuyamungue, New Mexico, on August 17, 1931, to Ramon and Catalina Montoya. His early life was challenging, filled with hard work and a close connection to the land around him, surrounded by good neighbors and community help. He spent a good portion of his early years taking care of his grandfather while the family went to California for work. After graduating high school, he was called into service and proudly served in the Army in Korea. After completing his duty, he returned to Cuyamungue and built a life with Avelina, his high school sweetheart, and raised a family of five children. He worked as an optical technician at Los Alamos National Laboratory while tending to his parents, family, and garden. He retired in 1990 and continued helping his children as they built their lives and families.

Buddy is remembered as husband, father, grandfather, and friend who instilled in his family a love of the land, acequia, and farming. He was always active, in early years, building his home farm, camping and fishing, and raising a family, working with local organizations. Throughout his life, he instilled values of acceptance, hard work, and generosity. He was well known in the community with many friends and family. He was involved with the Knights of Columbus, Pojoaque Valley Volunteer fire department, SPMDTU, American Legion and was a member of Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe del Valle de Pojoaque. Buddy was a humble and hardworking man who always was willing to help and will greatly be missed.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Avelina Montoya and their children, David Montoya and wife Cindy, Diana Rael and husband George, Donald Montoya and wife Jennifer, Derrick Montoya and wife Lisa; daughter-in-law, Debbie Montoya; grandchildren, David Montoya, Christian Montoya, Tess Montoya and husband John, Dominic Rael, Adam Rael and wife Angie and children Adam Baudiño (Buddy) and Omar, Vanessa Rael, Logan Montoya, Amanda Montoya, Taylor Jung and husband James and child Ava, Gabriel Montoya; in-laws Corrine and Lou Madrid, Betty Valencia, Floyd Rivera, Walter and Brenda Rivera, Geraldine and Ron Dirks, Bertha Montoya, Ray Lopez;  and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of a formal rosary and mass restrictions due to coronavirus, we kindly ask you to pray for the repose of Buddy’s soul in the silence of your heart.

The family of Baudiño J. Montoya has entrusted the care of their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
