Barbara Buchen

Barbara Agnes Nieters Buchen AKA Babsy died peacefully at home on July 19, 2018.

Barbara was born in Denver, Colorado on March 2, 1924 to William and Nellie Mallory Nieters. She was preceded in death by John, her husband of 67 years, her son Jerry, her granddaughter Sarah Buchen, and her three sisters, Mary, Helen and Peggy. She is survived by her children Theresa Hoffman, Katy (Frank) Fuchs, Tony Buchen, Tina Buchen, daughter-in-law Lynne Loucks Buchen, 5 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren.

She graduated from Loretta College with a degree in Chemistry. During WWII she worked at General Chemical Company in Denver and later in the chemistry department at the University of Colorado while John was getting his degree. They married in 1946 and lived in Marblehead Mass. for a year before coming to Los Alamos in 1949. From that point on, she devoted her life to supporting her husband, her children, and the community at large. She was passionately involved in numerous charities, activities, and social causes throughout her life. She enjoyed camping traveling, knitting, crosswords, bridge, and Facebook. Even in the last few months of her life, she continued to care for and about the lives of others.

She lived and died with dignity, grace, generosity, gratitude and humility. Barbara and her family were especially grateful to Alaina Cole of the Los Alamos Visiting Nurses for her support in Barbara's end of life care.

Rosary will be at 10:00 am on July 26 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Los Alamos. Mass will be celebrated at 11:00. A reception will follow at the Parish Hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Los Alamos Visiting Nurse Services, 2202 Canyon Rd. Los Alamos, NM 87544 or to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Christian Concern Committee, 3700 Canyon Rd. Los Alamos, NM 87544. The family of Barbara Agnes Nieters Buchen has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
