Ventura (Vern) Velasquez, age 48, a resident of Chimayo passed away unexpectedly on Friday June 28, 2013. He grew up in Chimayo, and was very proud of his roots. Ventura Velasquez was preceded in death by his brother Robert (Valentine) Velasquez, paternal grandparents, Salomon and Carmelita Velasquez, and maternal grandparents, Candido and Sara Romero. Ventura was a lather by trade, construction worker and was also a handy man. He maintained a life-time friendship with everyone he knew. He is survived by his parents, Bernie Sr. and step- mother Esther Velasquez, mother, Elsie and step-father Ramon Amaya; long-time companion of 18 years, Janyus Romero and his loving daughter, Cynthia Velasquez. Sisters, Bertha Denetclaw, half sisters, Pauline Herrera, Pamela and husband Darrell Vigil, Kathy and husband Steve Griego, brothers, Bernie Jr, and wife Lori Velasquez, Jimmy Velasquez, David and wife Carmen Velasquez, half brother Salomon and wife, Sunny Velasquez and half brother, Michael Amaya and many other nieces, nephews and other relatives. Public visitation will be held on Monday July 1, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home, with a rosary to follow at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Chimayo, at 10:00 a.m. Burial to follow at the Nuestra Senora de Dolores Cemetery in Chimayo. Serving as pallbearers will be Bernie Jr Velasquez, David Velasquez, Jimmy Velasquez, Salomon Velasquez, Kenneth Denetclaw, and Ivan Velasquez, Honorary pallbearer will be Santiago Martinez, Michael Amaya, Lena Denetclaw, and Sam Loftin.
