Tomas E. Vigil

Tomas Elizardo Vigil, 85, of Taos, NM, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2024 after a lengthy illness.

Tomas was born on November 22, 1939, to Elizardo and Trinidad Vigil in Cundiyo, NM. After he graduated from St. Michael’s High School in 1957, he went on to study Forestry Management at New Mexico State University. He was employed by the State of New Mexico Highway Department for 23 years and retired in 1998. After retirement, he moved to Taos, NM where he spent the rest of his years enjoying the beautiful mountains surrounding his home, fishing, gardening, travel adventures, attending senior dances, and playing cards with family and friends. He will be remembered as being an extremely hardworking, vibrant, and spirited individual with an expressive sense of humor. 

Tomas was preceded in death by his sons Thomas and Andrew Vigil; parents Elizardo and Trinidad Vigil; brother Tobias Vigil; former spouse Miquelita Vigil; paternal grandparents Tiofilo and Elaisa Vigil and maternal grandparents Longino and Gelacia Vigil. 

Tomas is survived by his loving companion of 26 years, Virginia Martinez; children Frances Rodriguez (Henry) and Judy Fresquez (Gene); daughter-in-law Sheila Vigil; grandchildren Deondra, Raquel, and Rico Rodriguez, Joshua and Mikaela Fresquez, James Vigil (Kathy); great grandchildren Veronica and Davina Fresquez, James Jr. and Khaliah Vigil; sister-in-law Connie Vigil; and nephews Steve, Randy, Barney, and Marvin Vigil.

A Rosary followed by a Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Chimayo, NM. A private burial will take place at a later date.

Serving as pallbearers: Gene Fresquez, Joshua Fresquez, Rico Rodriguez, James Vigil, Donald Martinez, and Mark Conley.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Donald Martinez who was like a son to Tomas and was his primary caregiver during his lengthy illness. We would also like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at Christus St. Vincent Hospital.
