It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Theresa T. Velasquez, who left us on October 7, 2026 at the age of 93 surrounded by her loving family. Theresa was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Theresa was born on June 28, 1933, at the Santa Fe Indian Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Antonio and Rafelita Torres; her loving husband of 69 years, George Velasquez; brothers, Jose Torres and Wilfred Torres; brothers-in-law, Leroy Velasquez and Joe Ruybali; sisters-in-law, Sofia Ruybali, Laura Torres and Sharon Velasquez; granddaughter, Sheri Martinez; great grandson Anissimo Flores; and great niece Nichole Montero.
Theresa is survived by her children Diana Velasquez, Rick (Darlene) Velasquez; grandchildren Liana Velasquez (Dominick), Amelia (Shawn) Perraglio, great grandchild Sheri Perraglio, brothers Robert Torres and Eloy (Virginia) Torres; sister-in-law Madge Velasquez, and numerous nieces, nephews, and Godchildren.
Theresa started her working career at an early age in San Juan at Krammer’s General Store. After her high school graduation, she worked at Woolworths store in Santa Fe and First National Bank in Santa Fe. When George and Theresa were married June 18, 1955, she started working in Los Alamos, first at Zia Corporation and then went to Los Alamos National Laboratory, where she retired from.
She was a devout Catholic, member of the Knights of Columbus Women’s Auxiliary Club, member, lector and Eucharistic Minister at the Santa Cruz de La Canada Church, and a Mayordomo for the San Isidro Chapel in La Mesilla. She loved music, dancing, cooking and baking. She also loved playing with her granddaughters and great granddaughter. She loved adventures and she always had stories to tell and when she and George would come back from an RV trip.
The family would like to thank her caregivers from Givings, the staff at the Espanola Presbyterian Hospital for the great care they provided to her. The family would also like to thank all of her neighbors and friends for the visits, comforting words and most importantly prayers.
Public Visitation will be at DeVargas Funeral Home on Monday October 19, 2026, at 8:30am. A Rosary will be held at 9:45am at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Santa Cruz, NM, on Monday October 19, 2026. With a Mass to follow at 11:00am. Burial will follow at Santa Cruz Holy Cross Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers are; Danny Holder, Tommy Holder, Mike Herrera, Bobby Lopez, Tim Garcia, Eloy Torres and Paul Murillo.
