Stanley Moore, born September 23, 1928, in Hays, Kansas, passed peacefully on September 16, 2025, in Los Alamos, New Mexico, just shy of his 97th birthday. A devoted family man, decorated veteran, and lifelong outdoorsman, Stanley lived a full and purposeful life marked by resilience, curiosity, and quiet strength.
He was a proud veteran of the United States Army and served in Korea in the 25th Infantry Division. He was recognized with a Bronze Medal in recognition of his courage and commitment to duty. He married Carol Munson in 1950 while serving.
Stanley earned a baccalaureate degree in Mechanical Engineering from Kansas State University in Manhattan and worked for Westinghouse and Los Alamos National Laboratory. His passion for mechanics extended beyond the professional realm—he found joy in maintaining and repairing autos including overhauling the Los Alamos Lion's Club parade car and was repairing cars just three days before his passing. Stanley loved skiing, helped manage the Los Alamos Ski Club, worked to acquire real estate for the Pajarito Mountain Ski Area, and participated on burn crews on the mountain. He was an avid fisherman, gathered mushrooms, and hunted game birds. Whether navigating snowy slopes or casting a line into quiet waters, he embraced the natural world with enthusiasm and reverence.
He shared the last 18 years of his life with Mary Swickard, his loving partner. Their companionship brought joy to his later years. Together they volunteered for the Lion's Club Kid Sight program and examined the eyes of over 2000 children in Northern New Mexico. They also distributed food weekly to support a rehabilitation program for young men at the Rock Christian Fellowship Church in Española for years.
Stanley is remembered with love by his children Robert, Margaret, and Susan; grandchildren Jeremy Begay, Benjamin Begay, Caleb Moore, and Emily Moore; as well as numerous beloved grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren, and the families of his and Carol's nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Carol, brother Harvey, and his daughter Sally.
May Stanley's memory bring comfort to those who knew him and serve as a lasting tribute to a life well lived.
A graveside service is being planned for November 14, 2025 at Guaje Pines Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Adaptive Sports Program New Mexico would be a generous remembrance of him.
