Shirley Ann DeVargas
January 2, 1947 ~ February 10, 2026
Shirley Ann DeVargas was born on January 2, 1947, and went to be with the Lord on February 10, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer.
A lifelong resident of Espanola, Shirley graduated from Espanola High School and later attended Santa Fe Business College. She built a respected career as a legal secretary, serving several attorneys in Santa Fe until her well-deserved retirement.
Shirley found great joy in simple, heartfelt pursuits; crocheting intricate pieces, tending her beloved flower garden, and handcrafting beautiful cards for every occasion to share with family and friends. Her creativity and generosity touched many lives.
She was preceded in death by her parents John Martsh and Elvira (Vera) Martsh-Martinez; her beloved daughter Antionette Salazar; her husbands Jose Elias (Lee) Salazar and Gerald DeVargas; and her brothers John Martsh and James Martsh.
Shirley is survived by her devoted daughter Shawn Rios (Robert); sister Barbara Fresquez (Paul); sisters-in-law Carmen Martsh, Roselia Martsh, Vangie Salazar, Shirley Lujan, Margie Martinez (Fred), Lorraine Vigil (Fidel), Elaine DeVargas and Pam Quihuis; brothers-in-law Johnny DeVargas, Philip DeVargas (Bertha) and Tim DeVargas; eleven cherished grandchildren who brought her immense joy – Jaime, Ryan, Leah (Patrick), Ava, Alexis, Marcus, Pheonix, Brix, Olivia, Madelynn and Jolee; and three great-grandchildren – Love, Eris and Dante.
The family extends heartfelt that’s to Father Benjamin, Laura Ulibarri and Alice Lucero, for faithfully bringing communion to Shirley each week, to all who visited, called and sent cards, provided financial support and food – your prayers, kindness and love were deeply felt and greatly appreciated. God bless each of you.
Special gratitude goes to Leroy and Patsy Duran for their unwavering support during this difficult time. The family also wishes to thank nurses Stephanie and Tommie from Ambercare Hospice, along with the compassionate staff at DeVargas Funeral Home, for their gentle and dedicated care.
Shirley’s warmth, faith, and loving spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
