Ross J. Chavez, Sr. 80 years old passed away on Friday, June 19, 2015 at his home in Espanola, NM after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. He was born in Chimayo, NM June 23, 1934 and was preceded in death by his father, Juan Ramon Chavez, mother Enisdel Chavez and a brother Tony Chavez. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ernedes Chavez. His children Kathy Chavez, Lori, husband Leroy Gonzales, Linda, husband Ronald Baker, and Ross Chavez, Jr. and wife Gina. His beloved brother Manuel Chavez and wife Elaine, brother, Bill Chavez and sister, Helen, husband Videlio Archuleta. He also had 13 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Ross J. Chavez served as a Corporal in the United States Army in Alaska. He attended Highlands University and received a Bachelor’s and a Master’s Degree. He taught school in Socorro, Las Vegas and Espanola. He was a teacher and Principal. Ross Chavez served the City of Espanola as a City Councilman for 8 years. Later, he proudly served as a Mayor of the Valley of Espanola for four years.
Ross J. Chavez was very proud of a cabin he built in Durango, Colorado where he spent many summers there with his wife and family. They traveled many places in Europe such as Spain, France, Portugal, and Brazil. They also traveled to Hawaii and went on many cruises to the Mexican Rivera’s, and the Caribbean.
He was proudly approached by many of his former students who admired him and they always stated that he highly impacted each of their lives.
He died quietly and peacefully at his home surrounded by his family and friends. He will continue to live in our hearts and his death is visibly and profoundly being felt by those with whom he had contact with.
Public visitation will be held Wednesday June 24, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. at the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday, June 25, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Espanola, with a burial to follow at 2:15 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.
