Obituary

Ronald G. Karcher passed away peacefully on June 17, 2026, at the age of 90. Born on January 18, 1936, Ron lived a life defined by service, friendship, and an unwavering love for the Española Valley and its people.

Ron proudly served his country in the United States Air Force before beginning a long career with the United States Postal Service. After settling in the Española Valley, where he first fell in love with the area while visiting the family of his first wife, the Vigil family, he dedicated himself to serving the community he cherished.

A natural leader and mentor, Ron was instrumental in the founding of the Agua Sana Fire Department, where he proudly served as Fire Chief. He also volunteered extensively with the local Red Cross and devoted countless hours to teaching Hunter Safety and Concealed Carry classes. His commitment to public service earned him the respect and gratitude of generations of residents and first responders.

In October 2025, Ron lost his beloved wife, Marylou Karcher, with whom he shared many happy years. Though her passing left an immeasurable void, Ron continued to face each day with the same strength, humor, and appreciation for those around him.

Ron is survived by his son, Gerry Karcher, and daughter-in-law, Julie Karcher; his grandchildren, Taylor Ossentjuk (Bobby) and Hayden Irvine; and his cherished great-grandson, Robert "Bo" Karcher Ossentjuk.

Anyone who knew Ron knew he never took himself too seriously. If asked how he was feeling, his trademark response was always, "With both hands." His quick wit, warm smile, and unforgettable one-liners brought laughter to countless friends and neighbors. Ron seemed to know everyone in town, and he wore his camaraderie with fellow first responders as a badge of honor.

Perhaps no moment better reflected Ron's life than his final trip to the hospital. The paramedic who answered the call had been Ron's friend for more than 20 years—a fitting reminder of the lasting relationships he built through a lifetime of service.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday July 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Santa Cruz, New Mexico. Burial with full Military Honors will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery.

Ron leaves behind a legacy of compassion, humor, and selfless dedication. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the entire Española Valley community, whose lives are better because he was part of them.

The family of Ronald G. Karcher has entrusted the care of their loved one to the De Vargas Funeral Home of the beautiful Espanola Valley 505-747-7477.
