Robert was born (26 March 1934) and grew up in Flint, Michigan.
He had a brother Richard (deceased), and sisters Zoe Ciscon (Houston, Tx), Suzanne Hurtl (Oakland, CA), and Kathryn Sabitino (Tucson,AZ). Upon graduating from High School he joined the Army, then returned to Flint and used the GI Bill to earn a degree in Engineering from Michigan Tech. He accepted a job with Los Alamos National Laboratory and moved his family, wife Sally, sons Richard and Carl, and daughter Lisa to New Mexico. He worked his entire professional career at The Lab including assignments at Omega West Reactor, where he earned a masters degree in Nuclear Engineering, and The Los Alamos Meson Beam Facility.
Bob retired from the Lab in the late 1990s to live and work on his property in Cundiyo, NM. In a house he built along the Rio Frijoles creek he spent the remainder of his 91 years constructing and managing ponds, roads, floods, snow and houses. Rearranging dirt, mowing fields and using his skid loader consumed his days then years. Bob lived to design and work. It was a life well lived.
On 2 June 2025, on the deck of his house overlooking his canyon compound he peacefully left his work in the company of his long time companion Julie Wilson, his daughter Lisa and Cundiyo friends. He was loved and will be missed.
The family of Robert Kandarian has entrusted the care of their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the beautiful Espanola Valley. 505-747-7477
