Robert "Sonny" Bernal

Beloved Husband, Father, Brother, Grandfather and Great- Grandfather; passed away January 23, 2026 at home with his family by his side after a lengthy illness.

Born in Pena Blanca, Robert lived a full life of 87 years. He was a strong believer in Jesus Christ. He took his last breath listening to the Word. What a blessing. He showed his belief proudly through scripture on his shirts, hats, and ties.

He enjoyed camping, fishing, and hunting. He was a very gifted carpenter. He studied martial arts for a while under the teaching of Chuck Norris while living in California. He returned to Santa Fe to earn his black belt. He also served in the Air Force. He loved his records, Spanish music, dancing, watching movies, and wrestling. Even though his life was full he still had time to teach his kids all the skills they would need as adults.

Although he is dearly missed, we are at ease knowing he is resting and no longer suffering. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy Bernal, whom he loved and adored. Son- Edward Bernal, Daughter Doris Pecos (Joseph deceased). Son Joseph Bernal (Virginia), Daughter Josephine Chavez (Phillip), Daughter Gwenda Ortega (Alex deceased). Son Robert Bernal Jr.(Melody). Grandchildren: Daryl, Nico, Leah (Tony), Joey (Janette), Brianna (Manny), Alyssa, Sean, Justin (Wilmer), Maria, Jacob (Andrea), Andrew, Alex, Gabriella, Isaiah, Lilliana, James, Troy (Sergio), Jordan, and Kaitlyn. Great-Grandchildren: Joe Paul, Angelina, Antonio, Aubrey, Abby, Aviana, Xander, Malaya, Alexzandria, Azaleia, Laylah, and Logan. Sister Diane Gonzales, and Goddaughter Sharon Gonzales.

He is preceded in death by his Mother, Emma Chavez, Father Bennie Bernal, Sisters Cecilia Bernal, and Dolores Borner.

There will be no services for Robert at this time.
