Pedro (Pete) Guillermo Luis Diaz, of Chama, New Mexico, and formerly of Las Vegas, NM, passed away at home on Monday, May 12, 2025.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Pedro and Virginia Diaz; siblings Frances Trujillo, Priscilla Martinez, Wally Diaz and William Diaz; his beloved son, Guillermo Luis Diaz; and his wife, Catherine (Kathy) Marie Diaz.
Pete is survived by his daughters, Francine Diaz of Cleveland, Ohio and Lorina Diaz-Gallegos (Greg) ; grandchildren, Izaiah Martinez, Nathaniel Martinez, and Peyton Gallegos of Chama, NM; and siblings Lorraine (Fred) Jaramillo of Albuquerque, Wilfred (Dora) Marrujo of Las Vegas, NM, Walter Diaz of Albuquerque, and Nancy (William) Goatley of Ratcliff, KY. He also leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Pete worked as an accountant until his retirement. After his wife's passing, he took over delivering the Rio Grande Sun, a role he cherished as it allowed him to stay active and visit with members of the community—something he looked forward to each week.
An avid hunter, fisherman, and “Mr. Fix-It” (at least he tried), Pete was known for his fierce love of family, unwavering strength, and sense of humor. He fought a courageous seven-year battle with cancer. Despite being given just 9 months to live at the time of his diagnosis, Pete defied the odds and remained strong for his loved ones.
He was deeply appreciative of time spent with family, always wearing a proud smile as he watched his extended family laugh and work together at gatherings. He was endlessly thoughtful and especially grateful for the friendship and support of Donald “Ducky” Martinez.
Affectionately called “Grumpy” by his granddaughter Peyton—a nickname that helped distinguish her grandfathers—Pete took on the title with pride. He never let life’s challenges darken his spirit and always made time to teach his grandkids new things. Whether it was fixing a vehicle or helping around the house, Pete could be counted on to supervise and share jokes and stories.
Pete will be deeply missed and forever remembered for his resilience, kindness, and sense of humor. He leaves a legacy of love, laughter, and strength that will live on in all who knew him.
