Mildred A. Hughes, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home in Chama, New Mexico, on January 13, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was 95 years old.

Born Mildred A Shomaker in Crossnore, North Carolina on March 25, 1931, Mildred lived a life deeply rooted in faith, family, and quiet kindness. She spent most of her years in the peaceful mountain community of Chama, where she and her devoted husband, Oscar Hughes—who preceded her in death in 1997—built a warm and welcoming home. Together they raised three cherished children: Gary, Debbie, and Marty.

Mildred is survived by her brother Buster Shomaker; her children Gary, Debbie, and Marty; her 8 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great granddaughter; and a wide circle of extended family and dear friends who were fortunate to share in her remarkable life.

To everyone who knew her, she was simply “Grammy,” a name that captured her nurturing spirit perfectly. Her family was her greatest joy, and she poured endless love into guiding them with gentle wisdom and unwavering support.

Mildred had a creative soul—she loved painting beautiful landscapes—but nothing delighted people more than her legendary homemade pies. Her soft voice carried timeless advice, her sparkling eyes held a unique warmth, and her hugs felt like home. Whether during holiday gatherings, family stories, or everyday moments, her laughter and presence created memories that will endure forever.

She will be deeply missed and forever remembered with love.
