It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Mike Garcia, age 61, of El Guache New Mexico. Mike passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by his wife and kids on the early morning of March 12, 2024. Mike was born January 20, 1963, in Espanola, to Jesus Garcia and Mabel Valdez. Mike fought a valiant fight against an illness for two years. He was a 1981 graduate of Espanola Valley High School. He married his high school sweetheart, Linda Aragon of Espanola on June 7, 1986.
Mike is survived by an enormous family unit starting with his wife, Linda, and children Sarah(Ben), Savannah(Ernest), Vicente, and Alexis; grandkids Gianna and Abram; step grandkids Ben, Caidence, and Landin; brothers and sisters Erlinda(Maclovio) Maestas, Padrinos Loyola(Delfino) Vigil, Louanna(Toby) Trujillo, Wilfred Valdez, Rudy(Pam) Valdez, Kay(Arthur) Pacheco, Earl(Kathy) Valdez, Barbara(Virgil) Vigil, Johnny(Manny) Valdez, Alvin(Norma) Valdez, Otilio(Chenky) Garcia, Mercy(Juan) Dominguez, Nicolas Garcia, Armandina Garcia, Fernando Salazar, Bobby Garcia, Phylis Garcia, Lorraine, Troy and Anna; mother-in-law, who he loved like a mother, Sara(Martin) Aragon; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Carolyn(Stephen) Quesada, Tom(Bernadette) Aragon, Tony Aragon, and Carmela(Randy) Aragon; godfather to Athena Marquez, Nathan Quesada, Ryan Fresquez, Juanito Dominguez, and Maribella Garcia; and numerous nieces and nephews and brother Tim. Honorary mentions to the “Pela’s”, Lawrence, Farmer, Bucksnort, Cambo, Tomidas, Moose, Matthew, Moya, Leo, and Vicente.
Mike was an incredible husband, father, son, godfather, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, friend, and hero. Mike took great pride in his work as an iron worker, displaying an extraordinary work ethic and craftsmanship. From his love of welding came his company, Seahorse Metalworks. He was also an avid hunter and amazing fisherman and could spend hours wandering around in the mountains. He was also a great artist, a bird enthusiast, an antique collector, and everyone’s most dependable handyman. The kindness, work, and favors he did for everyone are a testament to the endearing love that he felt for his fellow man and our community in Christ. Mike had a special kind of way of spreading joy and happiness to everyone through his one-of-a-kind humor or completing little acts of kindness for others. To call Mike “a blessing” would be an understatement. He was a truly selfless man with the most giving heart.
Family, friends, and all others whose lives Mike touched are invited to DeVargas Funeral Home in Espanola, NM, on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, Visitation at 4:30 pm, Rosary at 5:30 pm, followed by a Wake Service at 6:00 pm. Catholic Funeral Mass will be held the next day on Wednesday March 20, 2024, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Santa Cruz, NM, at 12:30 pm, with a luncheon to follow at the Hernandez Community Center at 2:30 pm.
