Max R. Sanchez, 92, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2025, in Española, New Mexico. A lifelong learner, dedicated public servant, and beloved family man, Max leaves behind a legacy of service, intellect, and warmth that touched many lives.
Born on March 27, 1933, in Anton Chico, New Mexico, Max was the son of Adelaido and Angela Sanchez. He was the product of humble beginnings, growing up in rural New Mexico. Max was part of a large family that instilled in him the values of hard work and education—principles that would guide his remarkable life.
Max proudly served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1956 as a Private Second Class. His military career took him to Fort Benjamin Harrison and Fort Lewis before he was stationed in Europe. Among the highlights of his service was attending the IBM School in Endicott, New York—an experience that sparked a lifelong interest in technology and computer information systems. His service in Europe was unforgettable, and he found great pleasure in recounting these experiences to both family and friends.
After completing his military service, Max pursued higher education with unwavering determination. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration and Accounting with a minor in Mathematics from New Mexico Highlands University in 1959. Max earned the title of Certified Public Accountant in August of 1960. He later went on to receive an Associate of Arts degree in Computer Technology from Northern New Mexico Community College in 1985. His academic journey also included studies at Arizona State University, the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), and Albuquerque Technical-Vocational University.
Max’s professional career reflected his deep commitment to public service and education. In 1974, he was elected as New Mexico State Auditor. Max’s campaign for state auditor was as part of the self-proclaimed “Taco Ticket”, consisting of fellow candidates Jerry Apodaca, Phil Lucero and Toney Anaya.
From 1978 to 1982, he served as General Manager of Jemez Mountains Electric Cooperative. His leadership continued at Northern New Mexico College where he held several key positions: Director of the Computer Center and Dean of Finance and Administration from 1985 to 1990. Later, he served as Comptroller at Central New Mexico Community College from 1990 to 1994.
Throughout his career and life, Max was known for being an intellectual with a quick wit and dry sense of humor. While some individuals did not understand his jokes, those who did found them truly entertaining. Colleagues and employees alike admired him for being friendly yet firm— a supportive leader who inspired those around him with his fairness and the genuine care he had for those he worked with. He imparted these leadership qualities to his children.
Outside of work, Max found joy in many pursuits. He had a deep love for reading and music— especially classical and mariachi. He was an avid woodworker who took pride in crafting with his hands. He also enjoyed traveling, skiing, and spending time on the golf course.
Max survived numerous serious illnesses and injuries. He often joked he had nine lives. In 2023, after overcoming COVID, Max authored a book, “My Life: A Chronicle of A Life Well Lived”, about his journey from rural roots to a remarkable life, emphasizing education, resilience, and dedication.
Max shared over 57 years of marriage with his beloved wife Annadelle Sanchez. Together they raised two children: Stephen Sanchez (partner Melanie Vigil) and Erika Fleetwood (husband Jeret). Max cherished his role as grandfather to Jaxson and Lukas Fleetwood.
He is also survived by his sister-in-law Jane Serna; siblings José Sanchez, Vivian Sanchez, Adeline Chavez, Patricia Sanchez and their families; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews—and countless others whose lives were enriched by knowing him.
Max was preceded in death by his parents; siblings Heraclio David Sanchez, Joe Robert Sanchez, Daniel Sanchez, Martina Torres, and Luis Sanchez; mother-in-law Aggie Serna; godson Patrick Norris; sister-in-law Betty Lou Norris; brother-in-law Leo Serna.
Max R. Sanchez will be remembered not only for his professional accomplishments but also for the kindness he extended to others—the thoughtful advice freely given, the laughter shared over stories old and new. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
