Mary Maestas

Mary Maestas, 72, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on Wednesday, January 3rd, 2024. She was born in Santa Cruz, New Mexico, and lived her life in the Espanola Valley.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Jose “Jay” Maestas, who adored her. Mary and Jay raised a family of children and grandchildren who will miss her dearly. Mary was truly a force of nature, tiny but tough. She met every challenge in life with steely determination and a loving and giving heart. She doted over her three grandchildren and travelled far and wide to be with them as they grew, attending every game and recital. While many people knew our mom as a mild-mannered woman who loved the cinema and baked amazing apple pie, we will forever remember her as the woman who climbed glaciers in Alaska, ziplined through the rain forest in Costa Rica, and swam with sharks in the Bahamas! Momma, we will miss you always.

Mary is preceded in death by her husband Joe R. (Jay) Maestas, daughter Jaylene DeAguero, Mother and Father Manuelita and Anastacio Lujan; in-laws Lourdes and Isidro J. Maestas; brothers Patrick and Anastacio Lujan, brother in-law Floyd Naranjo.

She is survived by her children Aaron (Donna) Maestas, Justin (April) Maestas, and Nathan Maestas; grandsons Dionicio (Maddy), Alejandro and Diego Maestas; brothers and sisters Gus (Betty) Lujan, Eddie (Erlinda) Lujan, Virginia Naranjo, Elmer (Liz) Lujan, Loretta (Leo) Archuleta, Bernice (Paul) Martinez

A Rosary will be recited on January 15, 2024 beginning at 11:30 a.m. Immediately following will be the Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 12:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish in Espanola, NM. Interment service will be January 16, 2024 at the Santa Fe National Cemetery at 10:30 AM.

Serving the family as pallbearers; grandsons Dionicio, Alejandro and Diego Maestas; godsons Adrian Maestas, Jeremy Lujan, Nicholas Manges,

Honorary pallbearers Gloria Clayton, Yvette Garcia, and Ashley Archuleta.

The family would like to thank all the staff at the Espanola Dialysis center and Christus St. Vincent Hospital for their care of Mary. We appreciate you all very much.
