MARY A. FERNANDEZ, 83 a resident of Rio Lucio, passed away on Monday, September 21, 2020. Maria was preceded in death by her baby-girl Fernandez; parents, Jose Rafael Leyba and Maria Antonia Chavez; step-father, Manuel Chavez; father-in-law, Felix Fernandez, Sr.; mother-in law, Aurora Mascarenas Fernandez; grandparents who raised her, Ismael Leyba and Libradita Gonzales Leyba; sister, Silvia Romero; daughter-in-law, Leona Fernandez and great-grandson, Angel Cordova. Maria was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Her grandchildren brought her great pride, much joy and she loved caring for them. Maria was humble and very generous. She enjoyed reminiscing about growing up in Llano Largo and the good old days. Family and friends near and far were a blessing to her and she welcomed them with open arms. Maria is survived by her husband of 67 years, Franklin Fernandez, Sr.; children, Franklin Fernandez, Jr. and Diana, Carla Blea and Patrick, Michael Fernandez and Doris; grandchildren, Yvonne Irving (Dave), Michelle Rodriguez (Juan), Nathan Fernandez (Andres), MaryFrances Cordova (the late Jose Lopez), David Cordova (Leanne), Aaron Fernandez (Jessica), Kimberly Fernandez and Anna Maria Fernandez; great-grandchildren, Dominic Lopez, Krysta Rodriguez, Jade Cordova, Carlos Lopez, Estrella Rodriguez, Maya Rodriguez, Jeremiah Cordova, Gavin Fernandez, and Lila Rodriguez; sisters, Elizida Gurule (Aurelio), Ruth Grundhauser (William), and Betty Guana; brothers, Joe A. Leyba and  Eloy Aleman (Irene); sisters-in-law, Carol Sanchez (the late Dennis), Julianita Gurule (the late Hilio), Endelecia Pacheco (the late Henry), Julia Fernandez (the late Leo), and Mina Martinez; brothers-in-law, Barolin Fernandez (Ramona), Adelio Fernandez (the late Flora), Norbert Fernandez, Felix Fernandez, Jr., Juan Fernandez (Aurelia), George Fernandez (Rose Mary), the late Pablo Fernandez, and Albert Romero (Oliva) as they referred to her as Hermana. Public visitation will begin on Sunday, September 27, 2020 at 5:30 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory with a rosary to be recited at 6:30 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, September 28, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the San Antonio de Padua Catholic Church in Peñasco. Burial to follow at 1:30 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers, Nathan Fernandez, David Cordova, Aaron Fernandez, Dominic Lopez, Juan Rodriguez and Dave Irving. Honorary pallbearers are, Yvonne Irving, Michelle Rodriguez, MaryFrances Cordova, Andres Alvarez, Kimberly Fernandez, Jessica Fernandez, Anna Maria Fernandez, Krysta Rodriguez, Jade Cordova, Estrella Rodriguez, Carlitos Lopez, Maya Rodriguez, Jeremiah Cordova, Gavin Fernandez, Lila Rodriguez. The family wishes to thank Espanola Fresenius Care for the excellent dialysis service that was offered.  She considered patients and staff as her second family. The family of Mary A. Fernandez has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
