Mary Elsie Martinez (May 26, 1943 – Oct 29, 2025)

Mary Elsie Martinez, a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, and dedicated nurse, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 82 at her home in Santa Cruz, New Mexico.

Elsie was born on May 26, 1943, a date and place that marked the beginning of a life defined by kindness and devotion to others. She was a long-time staffer at Santa Fe Care in Santa Fe, NM, where she served as a nurse, dedicating her professional life to the care and comfort of her patients. Her commitment to her vocation was demonstrated by her educational journey, which included graduating from the McCurdy School of Practical Nursing in 1975 and earning her AS in Health Sciences from North New Mexico College.

Beyond her professional life, Elsie was known for her incredibly kind and loving spirit. Her greatest joy was her family. When she wasn't working, she was with them, often spending her weekends with her granddaughter, Armani Martinez. The two shared a treasured bond, enjoying shopping trips and simply spending time together—the things a grandmother and granddaughter do best.

Elsie was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Jose Eluid Martinez; her son, Michael Martinez; her grandson, Adam Romero; grandson Jerome Gonzalez, and her niece, Doreen Barela.

Elsie is survived by her loving children, Matthew Martinez of Santa Cruz, and Eluid Martinez of Santa Fe. She also leaves behind her beloved grandchildren, Armani Martinez of Santa Cruz, NM, and Andres Valdez and his partner, Ayanna Ortiz of Rio Rancho, NM. She is survived by her sister, Lorraine King of Santa Fe, NM, and her nephew, Jimmy King of Santa Fe, NM.

Services are pending.

The family Mary Elsie Martinez has entrusted the care of their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the beautiful Espanola Valley.   505-747-7477
