Marvin Anthony Martinez
Marvin was born on August 1, 1957, in El Rito, NM, where he grew up and resided most of his life. He was called to go home to our Lord on November 6, 2023. Marvin was a loving son, brother, uncle, cousin, friend, and teammate. Marvin enjoyed traveling, going to the casinos, dancing, and spending time with family and friends. He loved animals and would pet and feed all the animals in the area. He also loved children and playing with his nephews and nieces when they were young.
He attended school in the Mesa Vista School District. After graduation he joined the Navy and served his country for four years. When he returned to New Mexico he attended New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. He got a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Computer Systems / Information Technology. He worked in his field with various state agencies then he worked with Rio Arriba County Government before retiring. He was a lifetime learner and enjoyed going to different conferences, taking classes, was an avid reader, and kept updated on the newest IT information.
After retiring he enjoyed meeting people at the Senior Center, Casinos and at Social Dances. He also enjoyed going to concerts. His passion at the time of his passing was Senior Olympics. He was a member of the Senior Olympics Board and had been competing in senior Olympics for almost two decades. He competed in Bicycling, Pool, Shuffle Board, Basketball, Soccer, Frisby and others. He would travel throughout the state for competitions. Although, Marvin was quiet and reserved he did not have a problem creating friendships.
Marvin was compassionate and a very caring person. He was friendly and always greeted familiar faces. Marvin was an active member of the Senior Center in Espanola; he was determined to advocate for arranging and supporting new activities for Senior Citizens.
Marvin was a devout catholic and would attend mass, pray the rosary, go to adoration of the blessed sacrament, and read the bible and other catholic documents on a regular basis.
Marvin is preceded in death by his parents Daniel I. Martinez and Vicenta Martinez; infant brother Robert Martinez; paternal grandparents Daniel and Adelina Martinez and maternal grandmother Trinidad Trujillo.
A public visitation will take place on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at 5:30 p.m. with a rosary at 6:00 p.m. at DeVargas Funeral Home in Espanola, NM. A public visitation will be held on Thursday, November 16, 2023, at 9:30 a.m. with a rosary at 10:00 a.m. and mass at 11:00 a.m. at the San Juan Nepomuceno Catholic Church with a burial to follow at the El Rito Community Cemetery in El Rito, NM.
Serving as Pallbearers are Robert Martinez, Ricardo Martinez, Patrick Holterman, Lawrence Holterman; Nelson Morfin Jr., Danny Martinez.
Honorary Pallbearers are AnnRica Martinez and Tessa Martinez.
