Marie Aiken, 91, a long-time resident of Alcalde, passed away peacefully December 29, 2021. Marie was proceeded in death by her parents Amarante & Teresina Villareal, her only child, Wayne Edward Aiken, and numerous family members and friends.
Born Maria Carlota "Lottie" Mercedes Villareal, Marie grew up in Alcalde, NM with her loving parents, 5 brothers and 3 sisters. She attended McCurdy Boarding School and at 18 joined the US. Army serving during the Korean War. Marie married Wayne Blake Aiken and had her one and only son whom she loved very much. Marie obtained her master’s degree from Highlands University and ran for State Representative in 1972. Marie was a social worker, and a long-time educator in the Espanola Valley often referred to as “Ms. Aikens”. Marie retired from teaching in the early 1990’s and enjoyed shopping, traveling, reading, and watching sports. Marie was an avid sports fan, she attended as many local games as she could, she was a Lobo and Lakers fan and was very proud of the accomplishments of all the educators, athletes and coaches in her family.
Marie was a loving daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, educator, aunt, cousin, and friend. She was a strong, funny, caring, and generous woman with so many stories and so much love to give. She will be dearly missed, and her memory will be cherished and kept alive by those who loved her. Ms. Marie Aiken is survived by her granddaughter Kacy Dunn (Husband Ty) grandson Allen Aiken (fiancée Nikki) sister Sylvia Lantz, brother Jerry Villareal (wife Noline) and many beloved nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
The family would like to thank the Veteran’s Administration and Ambercare for all the loving care provided to Ms. Aiken.
A visitation will take place on Thursday February 3, 2022 from 3:00 pm- 5:00 pm at the DeVargas Funeral Home of Espanola. Funeral Service will take place on February 4th, at 10:00 am at the DeVargas Funeral Home of Espanola with burial to follow at La Loma Vista Cemetery in Alcalde.
