Manuel Barela, 89, a lifelong resident of Coyote, passed away on Wednesday, March 4, 2015. He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Teresa; parents, Belarmino Serrano, Rosanna Serrano, and Jose and Juanita Pimentel; sisters, Emma Vigil, and Presciliana Herrera; mother-in-law, Susana Garcia; parents-in-law, Alejandro and Ignacita Herrera. Manuel was an employee of Duke City Lumber for 21 years as a heavy equipment operator, and a retired rancher. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and working on his ranch at Rito de Las Sillas. He loved chasing after and caring for his cows. He was a devoted Catholic, his faith was very important to him. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Manuel is survived by his four sons, Nazario Barela of Coyote, Isauro Barela (Delight) of Monticello Utah, Manuel Barela Jr. (Guadalupe) of Coyote, Antonio Barela (Marie) of Coyote, daughter, Berlin Cordova (Lucas) of Tierra Azul; a special grandson whom he considered a son, James Barela (Rachel) of Alcalde; sister, Teodorita Garcia; brothers-in-law, Pete Garcia and Tomas Garcia (Margaret); sisters-in-law, Adelires Trujillo, Atocha Gonzales, and Asencion Martinez (Albert); eight other grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and numerous nephews and nieces. Public visitation will begin on Monday, March 9, 2015 at 6:00 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory, with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at San Juan Bautista Catholic Church in Coyote, with a burial to follow at the Coyote Cemetery. Serving the family as pallbearers will be James Barela, Brian Barela, Dennis Barela, Ubaldo Barela, Phillip Valdez, and Jonathan Martinez. Honorary pallbearers named are Eligio Gabe Martinez, Harold Barela, Harold Martinez, Brandon Barela, Cory Barela and William Herrera. The family of Manuel Barela has entrusted the care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.\r\n
