Lucia Martinez

Lucia Martinez, 95, a resident of Dixon, NM passed away on Friday, January 26, 2024 peacefully at home. Lucia was born on May 19, 1928 in Dixon, NM to Margarito and Eliza Maes.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Juan C. Martinez; Parents Margarito and Eliza Maes; brothers Olivas, Elique and Margarito (Nuno) Maes Jr; sisters, Nancy Maes, Almeida Martinez and Carmen Valdez. She is survived by her children Joan Castellano (Robert) of Santa Fe, Marian Martinez “Pongie” of Espanola, Donald and Terence “Honey” Martinez of Dixon; Grandchildren Leticia Masse, Kenny Martinez and Liana Castellano, Great grandchildren: Alayna Masse and Mya Romero, sister-in-law Isabel Maes of Dixon and numerous nephews, nieces and other relatives and friends. 

Lucia loved cooking for her family and church family for potlucks.  She was skillful in playing the piano at the Dixon 7^th Day Adventist Church for more than 60 years as well as other churches in the surrounding areas as needed.  She had a passion for gospel music (hymns) and had a beautiful singing voice, at times accompanied by her brother Olivas Maes.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Ambercare Hospice for their compassionate care and visits during the last 11 months.  Also, thanks to Eileen Maestas, Evila Rendon, Rosa Adame, Maria Arellano, Esther Griego, Grace Martinez and the late Naomi Mascarenas for their assisted care giving.

A viewing will take place on Wednesday, February 7, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. and a Memorial Service at 11:30 a.m. at DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel in Espanola, NM. Burial will take place at 2:00 p.m. at Santa Fe National Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers are Dean Martinez, Norman Martinez, Kenny Martinez, Alvaro Baca, Erwen Maes and Leonard Valdez.
