Heaven welcomed a new angel when Louella “Lulu” Salazar left this world on December 13, 2025. Born on January 23, 1966 in Santa Fe at the Cradle Home, Lulu graduated from New Mexico School for the Deaf, where her love for arts and crafts was nurtured. Her senior photo appeared in Vogue Magazine, and she received her diploma from Governor Bill Richardson.
Lulu was a swimmer in her youth, and she participated in Special Olympics events, traveling as far afield as Colorado Springs, and receiving numerous medals in bowling. After attending New Vistas, a job training center for the disabled, Lulu moved out into the world at large. Over the years, the meticulous worker brought her skill set to jobs at Kids Korner and Aroma Coffee. She also did volunteer work as a door greeter at K-Mart, and later at Kitchen Angels, where she washed vegetables, wrapped packages, and delivered meals to seniors and disabled people.
Lulu was a hugger who spread love and joy everywhere she went. She couldn’t walk down a street or go into a grocery store without embracing the people she recognized, and she was deeply beloved in the communities of Pojoaque and Santa Fe. She was especially close to her niece and nephew Angelique and Jarrod, and also her late relatives Uncle Dave and Mama Stella (Uncle Dave was a father figure for her). Her wide circle of friends also included Jesus, to whom she sang daily (her favorite song was “Here I Am, Lord”), and her imaginary friend Brenda, with whom she shared her grievances.
Along the way, Lulu also charmed celebrities; she lunched with Larry Hagman and dined with Steven Seagal, but her love wasn’t reserved solely for people. She loved her cats, with whom she conversed, and she loved butterflies and hummingbirds, the beauties of this world. Her favorite things also included beaded jewelry, bright colors, soap operas, and Santa Claus, who was grateful each year for the milk and cookies she left out on Christmas.
Lulu always had had a Coke in her hand and a watch on her wrist, and she took great care daily to dress in carefully color-coordinated outfits. Because her middle name was Diana, her family sometimes called her Princess Di—fittingly, she received a tiara for her birthday last year, which she proudly wore throughout the day. She loved movies and television, but beware when her regular viewing schedule was upset! Her favorite film was Frozen— she enjoyed dressing up like Elsa, and her extravagant bedroom décor was a tribute to the film’s design.
Love and kindness, compassion and forgiveness were the hallmarks of Lulu’s life, and her joy and radiance led many people to feel as though they were in the presence of an angel. If she encountered rudeness, she would pause and then comment, “Poor thing…” Lulu saw no evil, and found only goodness in the world; reflecting on the physical challenges she had faced, she would smile and say, “God made a little mistake,” but everyone who knew her recognized that God had made no mistakes in the perfection of her beautiful spirit.
Lulu was preceded in death by her loving grandparents, Frank and Sidelia Salazar; her uncles Vivian, Gabriel, and Eugene “Geno” Salazar; her aunt and godmother Eloisa Martinez; her cousin and honorary sister Annette Salazar; her cousins Yvonne Martinez and Press Salazar; and her padrinos Uncle Dave and Stella Salazar.
Lulu is survived by her mother Cris D. Salazar; her sister Pamela Romero (Kenneth); her honorary brother Adrian Chavez Jr.; her aunts Cordie Quintana ((Larry Sr.), Bernadette Salazar, Grace Velarde and Lupe Salazar; her niece and nephew, Angelique and Jarrod Romero; and her cat Nana. In addition, Louella had more cousins than we can name here, but we want them to remember that she loved them all.

She was never broken in God’s eyes
She was known, loved and held every day of her life.
She was ours— Loved deeply, fiercely, and without condition.
God saw her strength in quiet ways, Her beauty beyond what the world could see, Her worth beyond measure.
Now we release her with love. She is no longer in our care, but in God’s. At peace, made whole, and held forever— wrapped in a love that never ends.
-Angelique Romero
