LEO M. MARTINEZ, 80, a resident of Chimayo, passed away on Monday, May 15, 2017. Leo graduated from McCurdy High School in 1957 and later joined the U.S. Army where he served his country honorably during the Korean War. He worked for the State of New Mexico, Department of Motor Vehicles and retired after 30 years. He ended his career as Manager of the Española Field Office. Leo served his community as an Española Public Schools Board Member for 12 years. Leo enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and tending to his apple orchard. He had a great sense of humor, was full of life and always had a smile on his face. He will be greatly missed but will live on in our hearts forever. He was preceded in death by his wife, Flora L. Martinez; son, Danny P. Martinez; grandson, Danny Martinez Jr.; great-granddaughter, Jacyana Gallegos; parents, Lucas and Adelita Martinez; sister, Matilda Vigil and husband Jose; brother, Elizario Martinez and brother-in-law, Herminio DeAguero. Leo is survived by his longtime companion, Martha Vigil; daughter, Danette Martinez and husband Tim; grandchildren, Alicia Martinez and Carlos, James Martinez and wife Jackie, Rochelle Romero and husband Rick, Miranda Martinez and her mother Edwina Romero, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Florinda DeAguero and Lupe Padilla and husband Louie; brother, Joe Martinez and wife Marie; sister-in-law, Elvira Martinez and the Vigil family: Yvette, Mario, Renee and Jeff, Mike and Melissa Martinez and many loving nieces, nephews and friends. Public visitation will begin on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory, with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, May 25, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Chimayo. Burial will take place at 12:45 p.m. at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. The family of Leo M. Martinez has entrusted the care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
