Kathleen Regina Maestas

Kathleen Regina Maestas was born to parents Reggie and Maria Maestas on July 29, 1970, in Española, New Mexico, which became her lifelong home. She was a sister to Melanie Maestas and Reggie (Kimberly) Maestas, and she is survived by her two beloved fur-babies, Bajee and Bezoo. Kathleen was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Alfredo and Rosanna Sanchez; her paternal grandparents, Filberto and Donelia Maestas; and her padrinos Gilbert and Gloria Herrera.

Kathleen graduated from Española Valley High School, where she was also a member of the ROTC program. She was a famously skilled talker who excelled on the high school debate team. When telling a story she would include every detail, and you could easily find yourself talking with her for hours. Her family also remembers her always listening to Madonna and Hard Rock and her distinct knack for making them laugh.

Kathleen was known for her fierce self-determination, resolute in charting her own course in life. This strong will was matched by an equally great capacity for generosity, a trait that shone brightest through her love for animals. She owned many beloved cats and dogs throughout her life and was often known to take in stray animals of all kinds—no creature was ever turned away.

Her compassion extended to her human family, with whom she frequently shared food and thoughtful comfort items. In a final poignant gesture of care, one of her last acts was sending flowers to her sister.

Kathleen will be remembered as a strong-willed and generous spirit who consistently ensured those around her—both two-legged and four-legged—were looked after.

Services will be held at El Buen Pastor (609 Calle Rivera Española, NM 87532) on Monday, October 27, 2025, at 11:00 am. 

The family encourages guests to wear something purple, Kathleen's favorite color, in Celebration of her Life. Additionally, the family kindly requests that all attendees wear a mask to protect a high-risk family member; masks will be provided.
