Obituary

Juan “Johnny Cougar” Martinez, age 59, of Medanales, New Mexico, was born on January 8, 1967, in Española, New Mexico, to Anita and Jose Espiridon Martinez. He passed away unexpectedly on March 18, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Juan built a beautiful life in Medanales with his wife, Marcella, the love of his life, where they raised their children. He was a husband, father, son, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend to everyone who knew him. Known as a gentle giant, Juan was humble, kind, and deeply loving. He was always smiling, with a heart that was always ready to help others.

He proudly dedicated 30 years of his life to Northern New Mexico College before retiring just over a year ago. He cherished his coworkers and formed many lasting friendships throughout his career.

Juan had a passion for lowriders—he loved cruising through town, attending car shows, and anything related to lowrider culture. He enjoyed Northern New Mexico music and oldies and loved taking drives through the mountains. Above all, he cherished being a “Peepaw” and spending every moment he could with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jose Espiridon Martinez; his brother, Archie Martinez; his baby brother Martinez; his father-in-law, Juan Fernandez; his mother-in-law, Carmen Fernandez; his brother-in-law, Carl Cordova; his sister-in-law, Priscilla Fernandez; and many more beloved relatives.

He is survived by his loving wife, Marcella; his children, Juan (Jarrod), Marlina (Juliana), and Angel; and his beloved grandchildren, Adeline and Sebastian Martinez-Ramos, Ezeriah, and Aubry.

He is also survived by his mother, Anita; his brothers, Lorenzo (Sandra) and Orlando (Grace); his sister-in-law, Lucinda; and his brother-in-law, David; his padrinos, Alex and Elevina Salazar; his dear nieces and nephews: Loretta, Monica, Leslie, Amanda, Jeremy, Orlie, Gabe (Michelle), Rudy, Marcos, Julio, and Joe; and his great-nieces and nephews: Harmony, Mariano, Arsenio, Gianna, Natelie, Zach, Matthew, Krystal, and Gabriel; along with many aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends.
