Joseph “Levi” Gallegos, a cherished member of his family and community, passed away unexpectedly at age 80, on June 28, 2025. He was born on June 4, 1945, in Espanola, New Mexico.
He was preceded in death by his mother Socorro Gallegos, grandmother Deluvina Mascarenas, and son Christopher Martinez.
He is survived by his beloved wife Maria “Lora” of 50 years, sisters Angie Vigil, Charlotte Casias (Andy), and Dora Segura. He was a proud and deeply devoted grandfather to Anna, Tanya, Laura, BoDean, and his great grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by many special nieces and nephews, and close family and friends.
After a dedicated career at Los Alamos National Laboratory, he retired with the same quiet dignity he carried through life. He was a man of principle, hard work, and a steady presence in the lives of those who loved him. He loved spending his free time outdoors, leaving behind cherished memories of fishing and hunting trips with those he loved.
A Public Visitation will begin on Monday, July 7, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home in Espanola, NM. With a Memorial Service and tribute will begin at 6pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. at the San Juan Bautista Catholic Church. Burial will follow at the San Pedro Cemetery in Chamita, NM.
With the following serving as Pallbearers: William Segura Jr., Abram Vigil, Angelo Vigil, Adrian Chacon, Anthony Padilla Jr., Carlos Nava, Carl Schmitt and Jacob Martinez.
Honorable Pallbearers: His beloved grandchildren, & Gabriella and Guillermo Segura.
