Jose Lorenzo Martinez, 78, a resident of Canjilon passed away on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 surrounded by his loving family. Jose was born on October 27, 1932 in Canjilon to Jose De La Luz and Eufemia Martinez, and was raised in Canjilon. Jose was a logger and a miner. He was a very hard working man that whistled everywhere he went. He loved fishing and going to the horse races, and enjoyed the casinos. His favorite hobby was going for firewood & picking pinion when it was in season. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jose de la Luz and Eufemia Martinez; daughter, Doreen Baca; son, Baby Joe Martinez; sister, Casilda Leyba; grandmother, Teodorita Martinez, who he loved very much. He is survived by his loving wife, Rebecca Martinez of 51 years; mother-in-law, Maria Leyba; sons: Jose Lorenzo Martinez Jr. “Larry” and wife Sophie, Donald Martinez and companion Nancy Herrera, Floyd Martinez and companion Leslie Maes, Mark Martinez and wife Sonya; daughters: Opolonia Abeyta and husband Richard, Darlene Martinez and companion Jeff Clem; son-in-law, Stephen Baca; 12 grandchildren: Andrew Abeyta, Abraham, Stephanie and Angelica Baca, Melisha, Marcos, Juanito and Samantha Martinez, Ana Romero, Amberly Maes, Sabrina and Sebastian Garcia; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters: Julia Garcia and husband Augustine, Flora Garcia and Sally Montano and Marcella Herrera. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Public visitation will be held on Friday, September 23, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Peace at DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory. A second public visitation will be held on Friday, September 23, 2011 at 4:00 p.m. at San Juan Nepomuceno Catholic Church in Canjilon with a rosary to follow at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at San Juan Nepomuceno Catholic Church in Canjilon with burial to follow at the Canjilon Catholic Cemetery with the following serving as pallbearers: Abraham Baca, Marcos and Juanito Martinez, Rudy Leyba, Paul Jaramillo and Andrew Abeyta; honorary pallbearers will be all 12 grandchildren.
