Jose L. (Ben) Martínez, born November 25, 1942, a beloved figure of Española, sadly left our world on October 25, 2024, after a life richly lived in service and kindness. Known for his 48 years as a public school counselor and administrator, Jose was a beacon of light and hope in our community, enhancing lives through education around New Mexico. After graduating from Española High School, Jose served in the United States Air Force before beginning his collegiate career at New Mexico State University, NM Highlands University, and Oregon State University.
Ben, as he was affectionately known to family and friends, held many titles in his life, but his favorite roles were husband, father, and grandfather. He loved nothing more than spending time with his family. He cherished his children and his granddaughter immensely. His retirement was filled with garage sales, library trips, naps in the sunshine, and sneaking ice cream treats with his wife.
Ben is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Susie P. Martinez, daughter Pamela, son Delano and granddaughter Kailey. He was reared in a large, loving family of 13 with 11 brothers and sisters. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Ramon and Librada Martinez, brothers Alfonso, Ramon, Robert, and Mike Martinez, and sisters, Elisa Lopez and Clorinda Martinez, just three days before him. He is survived by his sisters, Lillian Romero, Martha Martinez, Julia Ortiz, Lucille (Eloy) Maestas and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services are entrusted to DeVargas Funeral Home in Española. The rosary will be recited on November 6, 2024, at 6 p.m., followed by a funeral mass on November 7, 2024, at San Jose Church in Hernandez at 12 p.m.
