JOHN D. “ROCKY” ARCHULETA, 59, passed away on Monday, June 20, 2011 at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque following a short illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Johnny and Juanita Archuleta of Santa Cruz; sister, Mary Jane Doglione; maternal grandparents, Jose and Drucilla Bustos; paternal grandparents, Jose Victor Archuleta and Mabel Archuleta; and a close uncle, Butch Archuleta. Rocky earned three Bachelor’s Degrees from the University of New Mexico and retired from the State of New Mexico as the Director of the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation. He grew up in the Española Valley, primarily the Santa Cruz area. He lived in Albuquerque for many years and had recently moved to the Abiquiu area. Rocky was proud of his Native American Heritage and his efforts on behalf of saving sacred land and petroglyphs during the extension of Paseo del Norte in Albuquerque. Mr. Archuleta is survived by his fiancée, Lisa Morgan; niece, Mellisa Sena (Jared) of Las Vegas, Nevada; his beloved dog “Blue”, Cockatoo Luca and many other relatives and friends. Public visitation will begin on Friday, June 24, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated on Saturday, June 25, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at La Iglesia de Santa Cruz de la Cañada. Burial to follow at the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Santa Cruz with the following serving as pallbearers, Gilbert Gonzales, Elmer Bustos, Lenny Lucero, Michael Ray, Bobby Shadoan and J.D. Padilla. Honorary pallbearers named are: Julie Risdall, Lori Jones, Elmer Lucero, Alice Lucero, Caroline Maberry, Wanda Wilkinson, Larry Barela, his many cousins, aunts and uncles. The family of John D. “Rocky” Archuleta has entrusted their loved one to DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
