Joe “Leroy” Garcia, (83), a lifelong resident of Abiquiu, NM, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2025, after a short illness, with his wife of 64 years by his side and the support of close family.
He was preceded in death by his son Marvin Garcia; parents Eliza Maestas and Ricardo Garcia; and his three brothers Chencho, Richard and Salvador Garcia.
Leroy is survived by his wife Flora Garcia; his sons Michael Leroy and Ray “Kenny” Garcia; daughter Kimberly Gonzales and his sister Maybel Harris, along with 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was a heavy equipment operator, contributing to the building of the Abiquiu Dam among other projects which carry a lasting legacy. When he retired, his hard work and drive continued as he dedicated his life to working the land that he loved. He was someone you could count on, and his laugh will be missed.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Ohkay Owingeh.
Honorary Pallbearers include Arturo Romero, Norman Salazar, Gabriel Quintana and Ken Harris.
