Jimmy Trujillo

Jimmy E. Trujillo passed away peacefully at home on May 16, 2022. He was born in Abiquiu, New Mexico on October 24, 1948. Survivors include his devoted wife, Debbie Trujillo and loving children Jaime Trujillo and Cordilia Trujillo, grandchildren: Anthony Reiman, Joshua Trujillo, Jayden Garcia, Donovan Trujillo, Zachariah Trujillo, Madison Trujillo. Siblings: Josie Valdez, Frances Martinez, Debbie {Charlie} Carrillo, and Ernie Trujillo and Mother In Law Placida Gurule, He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, cousins, godchildren and friends who loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents Jose C. and Belen Trujillo, Brother Floyd Trujillo and wife Virginia, Sisters Eulalia Garcia and husband Jake, Rosie McCall, Lou Evans and husband Jim, Cordelia Trujillo, Brother- in-laws, Eliseo Valdez and Octaviano Martinez as well as many nieces and nephews, all who have gone to be with the lord.

Jimmy married Debbie Trujillo in 1976 and resided in Albuquerque, NM. He loved his children and grandchildren and enjoyed family gatherings. He loved to garden and left beautiful gardens for all to enjoy. He enjoyed fishing, bowling and going to the casino.

He retired from the New Mexico State Highway after 25 years of service. He was a member of San Jose de Los Duranes church and was one of the original founders of the Santero Market in Old Town.

Jimmy was a faithful Hermano Penitente of La Piadosa Fraternidad de Nuestro Padre Jesus Nazareno at La Morada de Nuestra Senora de Los Dolores de Alto de Abiquiu. Jimmy was unable to participate this past Lenten season with his beloved Hermanos at the Morado but at his request a special Penitente Rosary was held on May 6, 2022 at San Jose de los Duranes with Jimmy in attendance blessing and greeting a large number of family, fellow artists and friends. What a blessing for all who attended to give one last hug to a wonderful man who was kind to all.

Jimmy was an acclaimed and accomplished Master Artist of the traditional Spanish Colonial Art form of Encrusted Straw and Bone Carving winning many awards at shows across the Southwest. He was awarded the highest award of the Spanish Colonial Art Society in 2013, the Master’s Award for Lifetime Achievement. His work can be found in the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art and Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, Denver Art Museum, Smithsonian Institute, the American Museum of Straw Art in Long Beach, California , in church collections as well as private collections world wide. He shared the knowledge of his art with many students in order to keep the tradition of Encrusted Straw alive.

Per Jimmy's wishes, no dark colors are to be worn for the funeral, and in lieu of flowers please make donations payable to La Morada de Abiquiu.

A rosary will be recited at 9:30 am with a Mass to follow at 10 am on June 10, 2022 at  San Jose de Los Duranes Church at 2110 Los Luceros Road NW, Albuquerque NM 87104 with a reception following.

Private internment will take place on June 11, 2022 in Abiquiu

Many thanks to family and friends who came from near and far to visit Jimmy during the last month. They helped him prepare for his journey to the Lord. Thanks to the Hospice Team from Presbyterian, friends, family, civitan and church volunteers who provided meals, caregiving assistance and support during a difficult time.
