Obituary

Jacob “Jake” Romero, age 86, passed away on July 16, 2026, in Albuquerque at the home of his daughter Jackie and her husband Michael. He was born on November 23, 1939, to Aurora and Joseph Jacob Romero Sr.

Jake was preceded in death by his siblings Joe, Willie, Irene, and Dolores, as well as his grandson Kevin.

He is survived by his sister Trish and her husband Rick. He is also survived by Clarabelle, and their children Ricky (Theresa), Jackie and her husband Michael, Danny and his wife Antoinette, and Jacob (Tammy).

Jake was a proud grandfather to Stephanie and her husband Adrian, Daniel, Brianna, Catriona, and Matthew, and a loving great‑grandfather to Penny and Oliver. He also opened his heart and home to his foster daughters Annabella, Ruth, and Rose. He is further survived by extended family members including Dolores, Jessica and her husband Ernie, Taylyne, Brayden, and many other relatives and friends who cherished him.

Jake’s story truly began when he moved to Hernandez at the age of five. He grew to love the Española Valley deeply and formed countless friendships throughout the community. Wherever he went—whether at a restaurant or in church—people greeted him warmly. Jake always remembered their names, where they lived, and what they did for a living. He never forgot a face because he genuinely cared about people and took interest in everyone he met.

He was well known for owning Romero’s Fruit Stand, a beloved landmark in the community. Jake was always willing to lend a helping hand, offer job recommendations, or support anyone who needed guidance. He generously contributed to various community events and was committed to uplifting those around him. His legacy is one of kindness, connection, and service, and his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

A rosary will be prayed on Friday July 31, 2026, at 10:15 am, at the San Juan Bautista Catholic Church in Ohkay Owingeh followed by a mass of Christian Burial at 11:00. Burial will take place at a later date.

The family of Jacob “Jake” Romero has entrusted the care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home of the beautiful Española Valley, 505-747-7477.
