Homer Dick Lewis , 91, a resident of White Rock, passed away in his home on Saturday, February 3, 2018. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Margie Lewis, who passed in 2009. Homer was born October 4, 1926 in Covington, Kentucky. He served in the United States Navy and then in the United States Air Force Reserve. Homer and his family moved to Los Alamos in 1952 where he worked at LANL as a metallurgical engineer until his retirement in 1986; he then continued to consult for LANL until 1994. Homer was active in the community and many will remember taking ski or karate lessons from him. He was instrumental in developing Pajarito Mountain as well as the ski school there. Homer enjoyed fishing and hunting with his friends and his son Dan. He took the family camping to many National Parks. Homer, also known as “Sand Branch” to the cowboy action community, enjoyed competing and even making his own hand carved rifles. Homer was not one to sit still for long as he loved to swim, play golf and cross country ski, depending on the weather. “I… a universe of atoms, an atom in the universe.” – Richard Feynman. Homer is survived by his children, Dan Lewis of Denver, Colorado, Holly Lewis of Bayfield, Colorado, Laurel Lewis of Amarillo, Texas and Heather Wheat of White Rock; nine grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. Private services will be held. The family of Homer Dick Lewis has entrusted the care of their loved one to the DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory of the Española Valley.
