Harold Mascarenas, 76, a resident of Estaca, New Mexico, was called to his eternal home with his loving wife and family at his side on Saturday, June 13, 2026. Harold was born in Chamita, New Mexico, on October 7, 1949, to Donelia and Sostenes J. Mascarenas.
He found joy and meaning in the beautiful moments of life: the mountains, camping, hunting, cattle roundups, cooking and cheering on the Espanola Sundevils at basketball games. In his younger years, he rode with the Sheriff’s Posse and became known at local parades as “the man with the dancing horse”, bringing smiles and excitement to everyone who watched him ride. He took great pride in caring for his farm and animals, no matter the season, he would often be found working in his yard, among the beautiful flowers that he lovingly tended. Harold was a loving man who was always willing to lend a helping hand whenever he could, expressing his love by helping family and friends. Above-all, Harold cherished every moment he spent with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, creating memories filled with laughter, stories and love. After many dedicated years of service, he retired from Albertson’s, where he was known for his hard work and commitment. His kindness, strong work ethic, and deep love for his family have left ever lasting footprints.
Harold was preceded in death by his daughter Mary Geraldine Mascarenas, mother whom he loved and cherished deeply Donelia Martinez Mascarenas, father Sostenes J. Mascarenas, paternal grandparents Antonia and Meliton Mascarenas, maternal grandparents Juan and Rosuarda Martinez, Brothers Michael, Johnny, and Joe Dennis Mascarenas, sister Barbara Jean Mascarenas, Mother-in law Santana Cruz, father -in-law Daniel Archuleta, brothers-in-law: Vincent “Bobo” Cruz, Ronald “Todd” Cruz and Jeff Montoya; son’s-in-law Alan D. Cain and Robert Montoya, grandson-in-law Albert M. Martinez
He is survived by his beautiful wife of 57 years, Maria C. Mascarenas, daughters Karrie Renee Mascarenas of Espanola, Jo-lynn Alvarez and husband Arturo of Estaca; grandchildren Germel D. Martinez of Espanola, Jasmine Cain and companion Jordan Sanchez of Alcalde, Juan Miguel Hernandez of Estaca, Fatima Trujillo, Heavenly Trujillo and companion Kenny Sandoval, and Amber Padilla of Espanola; Great-grandchildren Zilthai, Zerahiah and Nissi Segovia, Alanaya Serrano, Jolisa and Zainah Doss; Siblings Peter Mascarenas and wife Frances, Mark Mascarenas and wife Esther, Lorraine Sisneros, Carmella Martinez and companion Gilbert Ulibarri, Barbara Vigil and Diana Martinez.
A Rosary will be recited on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at 10:30 am at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo. The Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 am. Interment to follow at San Rafael Cemetery in El Guique, NM.
